I just bought a 90 fwd turbo laser the other day. and since purchase its been a little notchy going into all the gears. Mainly just 2nd and 3rd you could hear a slight crunch. well i went to take off in it this evening and i couldnt get it to go into any of the gears. Reverse it would grind but 1-5 is like hitting a wall. So i bled out the system and fiddled with the clutch adjustment rod and now i am able to go in 1-5 but it just grinds and wont go into reverse. so i was able to change my problem slightly. So i ask is it time for a new clutch?

Your clutch could just not be releasing for some reason? Have you watched the slave cylinder actually throwout the clutch? If it is not moving much, that could be it, since your 1-5 shifts will have help from the synchros, (well most of them). The reverse shift is direct, and will not go in smoothly or at all if the input shaft is still spinning from a non-released clutch. I have pried the throwout bearing by hand (Well, by bar) to troubleshoot this type of thing in the past, although you will likely need a hoist for that.

But in the end, it does sounds like you may have a beaten tranny, and will be getting the synchros done if nothing else... Could be simpler than that if you are lucky. I usually am not. :)

I would also check out your pedal assembly. It can wear out and cause the clutch to be out of adjustment. I would also check the pivot ball and fork. For how old our cars are, things are going to wear out. I had to replace everything in my clutch system, and get the pedals rebuilt to stop from grinding gears. All of this was still cheaper than rebuilding the transmission.

yes the slave cylinder does actuate all the way and return. and yes i went through the jacks trans adjustment method. I did notice the pedal wasnt coming up all the way to the cruise switch so i adjusted that to where it hit properly. i did take the slave off and i pushed the clutch fork by hand and i could hear i clicking sound and felt sort of rough. Trans is coming out tomorrow i wont have time to finish today.
