I just finished fixing my 95 AWD transaxle, ended up with an extra washer, which looks to be a shim. I didn't take any or the bearing races out so the only one that automatically comes out is the differential right? I took a look inside a 95 FWD transmission I have apart and the shim under the differential is exactly the same as the spare from the AWD. How important is this shim? Does it NEED to be there? In theory it shouldnt play a role in smooth shifting, but is it going to play a role in power distrubition? I planned on putting this tranny back in today and I will have to wait another week if I have to order new nuts for the gearset tops.... Any help will be greatly appreciated.... Thanks all

I figured better safe than sorry, took it back apart but now I have another issue, the diff has a different top bearing than the FWD so I'm unsure which side the shim goes in. I would assume it would go on the clutch side but then again assumptions sometime end with a disaster.

I didn't take any of the gear stacks apart, just pulled them and reinstalled then after installing the new shift rails and fork. I did to the test on the differential and it went down to nothing. The smallest shim mits offers is a .83-.92 so I didn't even bother. I called a local shop, who's owner has a 1g 700+ hp gsx, to find out the side of the shim, he said it always comes out of the pass side.

The trans I just rebuilt had the shim on the drivers side, even tho in the FSM it's supposed to be on the passenger side. It looks to have been that way from the factory so I left it since the gears had worn together that way...

So basically, just put it the way it was stock

I should have stuck with FWD, this AWD kicked my crack getting it back in last night. I atleast have the FWD down to a science. :D I get to finish buttoning it up today, one half shaft doesnt want to go back in the hub and its tickin me off!!

Ya it's fun ain't it? I got to do mine twice because of a faulty PP :notgood:. I'd like to kick the engineer who designed the chassis in the nuts
