I replaced a torn outer CV axle boot on the front passenger side of my '92 AWD Talon TSi, and when it came time to tighten the axle nut, I didn't have anyone to press the brake, so I figured that with the other 3 wheels on the ground I could use the drivetrain to secure the axle.
But when it got to just about the correct torque, which I set to 166ft-lb which is about midway through the correct torque range, I felt something "slipping" either in the TJ assembly on the trans side of the axle, inside the trans or perhaps the t-case, and then the torque wrench clicked so I was good.
Did I potentially break something? I drove the car back and forth a few times and everything seemed fine, but I didn't have my license with me and I was filthy from the grease so I couldn't drive the car around the block, which I'll try tomorrow. But I'm just wondering if this was the wrong way to secure the axle and if I possibly damaged something, and if so why.
I should add that the trans was most likely in reverse at the time, if that matters.
