ok i've gotten used to working on this car to the point where im looking for more of them.
i have a friend w/ a 90 talon fwd and its parked because he broke his timing belt going about 30 or 40 mph.
my question is are these impact engines or not, i mean would losing the timing belt during normal driving cause any damage to the engine components?

he says that is only thing that he is worried about and when he took it to mechanic they told them it would be like $700 to fix because it probably did piston damage. i told him i'd change his belt w/ my friend for the cost of the belt and some mcdonalds.

As far as i know, yes they are. When you timing belt goes bad things happen to your engine on DSMs. I would think it did more damage but then again, im not there. Come on some one back me up on this one

The 1.8 motors i believe would be ok if the timing belt broke(i can't remember the name of the motor). I am for sure the 2.0's are all interference, which means when the piston is down in the cylinder, a valve is taking up some of the space in the cylinder. With that said, if the timing belt brakes, the valves and pistons are no longer in time. So when the valves go down, the piston will most likely be there, causing bent valves(pretty much every valve will be bent), and some piston damage, but this may or may not be major damage. You will need new valves, maybe new pistons, some other things....

normally bends valves at least.could hurt pistons cause thats what bends the valves when they become out of time and hit the tops of the pistons.

The 1.8l's are non-interference. Break the timing belt and you don't have to worry about the pistons/valves. The 2.0s are interference. Break the timing belt and you atleast have some bent exhaust valves.

crap, this car isnt as promissing as it used to be.
the paint is overlapped macco crap all over. its straight, the interior is missing some butons and stuff and overall the engine is clean.
he is thinking of selling it for like $200 -$400 cus he put new tires on it.
would you guys go for it as a parts car?
he realy doesnt seam like the person that would want to start a rebuild considering he coudlnt find his throttle cable.

only promissing thing i see it for is a parts car and the fact it has a 20k mile old tranny previous owner put in.
if i go for it how much ya think its gonna cost me assuming all i have is smashed valves and decent pistons.
