Crazy Idle

I have a 95 automatic GST. When I start the car the idle jumps right up to 2000 and goes down slowly and the car just dies. To keep the car running I must keep pumping the gas, however when I do this I hear alot of popping noise(backfire). Also the cars turbo is removed could that be the cause of the problem? The battery light comes on when the car is started but both the battery and altenator is new. Also the under hood fuse box the last two realays on the passanger side is missing, but I dont believe that is the problem because the car was running with out them for a while. So for writing so much but i wanted to describe everything!

Why would you try to start the car with no turbo? So your inter cooler pipes are just hanging there? That might be your problem.

the whole turbo setup was removed!

so your exhaust manifold is connected to the downpipe and your MAS is connected to the throttle body? Why would anyone do this?
