Sure some people out there could make 1k hp on the stock crank, but I wouldn't call it reliable. I've seen more than one stock crank snap clean in half at much lower power ranges. If you're building a car for 500-600+ I would spend the extra money for a crank that provides a little more insurance, and piece of mind.
 
I wouldn't say the 5-600+ hp is even close to thinking about needing one. I know 2 local guys that have dynoed over 600hp thru an auto tranny and run 9s on the stock crank. Just don't have it cut down if it is badly scored. Throw it out and get a virgin one.

Most aftermarket cranks now aren't nearly as good as the OEM cranks. Currently eagle cranks which are one of the common aftermarket cranks lack quality control. Eagle uses a machine that can make multiple types of cranks instead of Mitsu who had to pump out way more cranks and use only one machine that makes one kind of crank. Thus it sets the difference between OEM and aftermarket. Any good aftermarket crank at this point like the magnus one is almost twice the price of a virgin OEM crank.
