The crankshaft balancer came apart at idle. I replaced the balancer today and now it will crank but does not start. It sounds like there is no spark. The motor just whines over. Thank you for any help.

That sounds like you destroyed the crankshaft angle sensor. It commonly occurs when the crank pulley (harmonic dampener) takes a crap. To replace it, you need to pull the crank pulley back off, along with the upper, middle (you will need to remove the drivers side motor mount and bracket to properly pull the middle cover without breaking it) and lower timing belt cover (accessory belts need to come off along with the water pump pulleys, but the timing belt stays on), and unbolt two bolts that secure the crank angle sensor to the front cover, then disconnect the sensor wire plug. Then plug in a new sensor, then snake the sensor back into its original position, bolt it down, reinstall the lower and middle and upper timing belt covers, driver side motor mount, water pump pulleys, crank pulley (harmonic dampener), accessory belts and retension the belts.

It takes a couple hours to do with basic tools (10, 12, and 14mm gear wrenches, 1/4" ratchet with 10mm (short and deep) and 12mm sockets, 3/8" ratchet with 10, 12, 14, and 17mm sockets (short and deep), a prybar, a few miscellaneous tools, and a 1/2" impact to remove the crank pulley bolt).
