well, i just want to know if the 95-96 and 97-99 crankpulley have any difference. i know they both recognize as 2g but i'm curious because i picked up a pulley at the salvage yard and it was from a 95 talon. now, ever since i got them installed(been a few days now), my car develops a big whinning sound from the left of the motor every time it revs more than 1500 rpm. i'll appreciate any input.... :)

Well, here we go again....
you are dealing with 2G car so that limits this a bit but there is still three (3) possible engines to deal with.

If you have a 2G that is non turbo, then you have the 420A engine.
If you have a 2G that is turbo, then you have a 4G63 engine.
If you have a 2G convertable (spyder), then you could have a 4G63 or a 4G64.
Now....Which engine did the pulley come from and which engine are you putting it on?

Here, just look at this...
The pulley from a 4G63 and a 4G64 are interchangable. No mater weather it is turbo or non turbo.
The pulley from a 420A will only work on a 420A.
Simple.

thanks man. i totally understand what you said. the new pulley(used) came from a 95 Tsi and i already have it installed to my car(97 GsT). i'm just curious because this hhhmmming sound developed after putting the new/used pulley on.

Well, let's see. Both your car and the TSi share the same engine, so we know that's not the problem.
Let's run down a few things..
Check List:

1) Make sure that ALL of your belts are seated corectly in all of the pulleys. Make sure that one or more belts are not hanging off of the inner or outer edge of the pully and maybe rubbing on something.
2) Double check your belt tension. If a belt is too loose it can vibrate and actually cause a harmonic sound that can be much like a whine or a slight hum even if the belt isn't loose enough to slip.
3) Make sure that the belt isn't too tight. If a belt is too tight it can put alot of extra pressure on a pully and make the bearings in an assesory (alt., p/s pump, a/c compressor, water pump, etc) whine or hum.
4) Make sure that the crank pully is spaced far enough away from the timing belt cover and isn't rubbing it.

Check these out and see if you can find the problem. If not, let us know and maybe me or someone else can think of somthing else to check in the meantime.
Best of luck.
Ken
