On 98 Gst, the outer crank shaft pulley is lose and is making a clanking sound against the inner pulley and/or the engine itself. It is hard to tell, but every time i start it up i get a little thud every couple of seconds, and also it squeeks very loudly when you first start it up. I am taking all the A/C parts out(A/C belt, condenser, etc.) and so i need to know what to do about this pulley before i put the car back together. Thanks for any help

Ohh yea, another thing. Cruise control, can i take it off without screwing up the throttle cable or no?...whatever. I just want to get rid of anything i don't need, and i deffinately don't need cruise control.

Yes, you can take off the cruise control.

Now about your crank pulley area. Have you made sure all of the bolts are tight? On your crank, there is (assuming you have the stock engine) the balance shaft belt sprocket, then the crank sensing blade, then the crank sprocket (which holds the timing belt), then the crank pulley itself. One, big center bolt holds on the sprockets, and 4 smaller bolts hold on the pulley. Make sure the are tight.

Another thing. Are you sure you're crank pulley is good? Them are known to fail.

If it sounds like you explain, I wouldn't start/run it until i figured out what it is. That is a pretty serious area down there near the crank pulley. Alot of problems arise from that area.

By tightening the main bolt and/or the four small bolts, won't that mess up how the crank and all that is timed. If i do tightenen it and it still hits, what do i do then? How expensive, how difficult, and is there and alternatives?...thanks for the reply.......has anybody else had this problem before?

Ok, again, check the crank pulley itself for problems.

No, tightening the bolts will not affect your timing.

BTW, you can turn the crank pulley clockwise all you want, but if you turn it counter-clockwise, you will jump timing. So don't so it.
