I went to start up my 98 eclipse spyder this morning and got a horrible noise. I turned it off right away and poped the hood and it looks like both my belts have come off the crank pulley. The pulley also seems to be sliding left to right. It doesnt look like it should be doing this. I also noticed a pretty massive oil sprayage in that area. None of the belts are broken just slipped off the pulley.

Any ideas? Bad pulley? Easy to replace?

I bought the car about 2 months ago from a guy who said he rebuilt the engine. Im not sure exactly what happend before or what he did. But it had new heads, water pump, all the belts were new, new clutch.

Not bad to replace. Check your timing belt cover and make sure the accessory belts didn't cut thru and take out the timing/balance shaft belt.

Happened to me once. I now make the crankshaft main pulley a service item every 60,000 miles at a minimum.

Can't remember if I used a gear puller, jacking screw, or a slide hammer to get it off, either way I don't remember it being that bad to pull out. I think a gear puller would be safer in terms of thrust loads on the crank bearings.

There is tons of clearance once you remove the inner mud guard and pull the wheel off.

I'd love to use a solid pulley but that poses other risks. I'm thinking of going with a fluid damper pulley in the future on a built motor. Cheers.

Sad to say this is a very common failure with our cars. The rubber dampening material eventually breaks down and as you've seen separates. If you're familiar with changing your belts then you're capable of replacing this, as if I recall correctly it's just four bolts holding it onto the crank (though you'll need to use a tool to hold the crank stationary while wrenching on them).

Awesome, Anything special i have to do when putting the belts back on? Havnt worked on my eclipse, but have done pullies and tons of other stuff on my stang.

Any ideas where to get the best deal on a new pulley?

Thanks for the help!:thumb:

I bought mine on ebay for like 70 shipped brand new.. As for tips on putting belts back on........ first one you put on is the a/c belt (closest to the timing cover), then you put your power steering belt on (if youre replacing it) then last but not least the alternator belt. It should literally take you 5 minutes to put the belts on. For the crank pulley you just remove the 4 12mm bolts (they call for somewhere around the range of 35 ft lbs tq when you put them back on). Oh................ You may have to take the crank bolt out because you may not have enough clearance to take the pulley off. Im not sure though. I dont own a 2g i own a 97 galant and the engine bay and all that crap is exactly the same and since you own a spyder we even have the exact same motor ;-). Good luck!

Sweet doesnt sound hard at all! Thanks for the Tips. Where did you pick it up for 70 shipped? I found one on thepartsbin but it looks like its 118 plus shipping

Keep in mind you MUST use a dampened crank pulley. Either a standard one with rubber or an expensive Fluidampr one which uses some high tech silicone. Solid pullies don't have the harmonic balancer and will lead to premature crank failure.

Last time I bought mine was from Rockville Mitsubishi in MD, ordered for somewhere around $80.
