I'm having a bit of a problem removing the balance belt sprocket that is on the crank. I had to use a puller to remove the timing sprocket on the crank. This is the thinner sprocket behind it and has no bolt holes.

Well, these two threads are about as close as I found to any help on getting this sprocket off the crankshaft. "Just pry on it evenly" or "mine slipped right off" didn't work. Neither did a puller. Its been soaking in PB blaster for a couple of weeks. I'm thinking about trying a propane torch next. Anyone got any other ideas?

I wouldnt use excessive heat, if the nose of the crank gets too hot it will toast the front main seal. If you do use heat...heat up around the actual sprocket where it goes over the nose of the crank, just becareful with the flame. Or just tap around it with a hammer lightly, maybe that will get it to wiggle loose enough to slide it off.

Get some wd-40 there and use your hand not a tool. Work the pully back and forth till it wiggles then try to even it out and slide it off. Tools will not help you need to use your hands.

I'll give that a shot tonight. I already chipped the top lip on the back while trying to pry from two sides at once with BIG screwdrivers. Hard to get even leverage cause the motor is in the vehicle right now.

Got it off but there was no single answer to it.
The rust on the crank and sprocket was most of the problem. I used a propane torch, different levers, a big brass punch, and some PB blaster and gloves so I could grip it once it came out about an inch I could actually grab the thing. It was quite a pain.

If you are eliminating the balance shaft you are fine . If you are replacing the BS belt I would get a new/replacement sprocket .

Yah, antiseize will definitely be going on there.
BSE is a go, especially since I chipped the sprocket

All this so I could replace the crank seal..well, and do the BSE too.

One tip for those who might try a puller. Take a close look at the sprocket pic. I put the teeth of the puller facing outwards. I couldn't see that there really was not much to grab onto at that point. If I had angled the teeth up on one side and down on the other (in opposite holes) OR inwards then it may have worked better.

BSE's are not fun, especially when the engine is in the car!

You did good removing the sprocket. I was going to suggest heat, but also to make sure you do replace the crank seal.

FYI Mitsu made and sell's a simple spacer that takes the place of the balance shaft sprocket. It was used on the cars that didn't come with balance shafts like colts, etc. This it if you don't just want to re-install the old sprocket.

The spacer is part #MD128107.

Interesting. Thanks both of you for the info on the spacer. Any reduction in rotating mass is good:thumb:

ps That part is $3.68 at mitsubishiparts.com so I'll be getting that when I order my new unbent crank flange plate (the one that ate about 1/8" of my timing belt!). Too bad its not part of a "complete" BSE kit! Wonder if the bse kit sellers know about it....
