I have a rusty pulley wheel sound. It's a sporadic sound, and of course never happens when actually at the mitsu service department.

They claim it's *probably* the idler tension pulley. But they also claim that to check it, it'll cost me nearly the same as an entire timing belt change, since the process is the same.

Is that true? Is it that difficult (for a mitsu dealer) to check, adjust, and/or replace the idler pulley?

Pulley noise could also be comming from the PS, Alt or AC.

Pull the top Timing cover and inspect the belt. If it appears frayed, cracked or glazed.. get it replaced ASAP.

Timing belt jobs are laborous.. so am not suprised by their comment on price. If one of the DSM vendors is nearby.. may want to let them do the work (I'm not a big fan of DSM-Dealors).

Yikes! Thanks for the link. Not exactly a 5-minute job in the parking lot, is it?

CW? Shhhhhh... don't even THINK it. No, haven't been checked. Also don't have any of the obvious symptoms (clutch wackiness, woodpecker sounds, ticking that gets louder when clutch in, etc.).

Why do you ask?

its not to hard to change the timing belt and components....as far as the VFAQ link, it is very detailed.....looks scary, but its really not, if u have some know how about cars, then you will yourself a few hundred bucks....good luck, and if u decide to do it yourself, PM me if u have any questions.
