cost of used awd transmission with welded diff ?

Searched couldn't find the combo. I have an option to buy a used awd manual transmission with welded center diff with said "no grinds" 7bolt its out of a 2g. What's a fair price ? Also I have a 7bolt 1gb tsi , is this transmission compatible? Thank you in advance for any advise

Also any tips on what to look for to ensure a good buy would be very helpful. How to tell if the diff is really welded? And if transmission is in good condition. Thank you again for any help.

you will only be able to tell if the diff is welded by looking at it. personally, i think its the wrong way to go, the welds will fail sooner or later and you will be stuck.

Sadly the only real way to check out a tranny is to drive it. Visually you can check to see if there are any cracks. Also check to see if the xcase bolt holes are in good shape and not stripped out.

I personally have put 15,000 miles maybe even closer to 20,000 on a welded center diff. all was daily driving. never failed on me. So I see no worries.

Now failure could happen from a bad welder that doesn't clean the sureface and get good penetration absolutely. The only way this is a bad way to go is if you are very picky about your car and don't want the rear end binding up on you going around tight turns.

?? It sure is a pretty common thread on the forums. "My welds broke on my center diff..why???"

Surely you don't think that every single weld ever made will eventually fail.

Unfortunately like doubled said the best way to check the transmission is to drive it.

We have never had any problems with our welded center diffs. From daily drivers to 9.0 cars with slicks and never once had a problem. Its all about the welder/builder.
