welded rear diff?

sorry to bring this topic back from the dead... but i atleast have some input on this subject. i happened to buy my car with a welded rear diff... and i have to say, its not all that bad... yes, i do notice it when i make sharp turns, and also when moving at real low speeds (like in parking lots). after driving the car in the mountains, and rain, i can say that the car still handles great. no drifting, no extreme chirping when turning (it does chatter a little though) when making sharp u turns. usually when you weld a rear diff in a rwd car it'll tend to promote oversteer. from what i've noticed awd dsm's are known to understeer. i'm not saying that this corrects understeering, but it may help some. all i know is my car feels great on windy mountain roads, and i also daily drive it. i dont really see myself changing the diff out anytime soon... when i first bought it, i thought it was going to be the first thing to go. haha. guess it grew on me.

Thanks for the input, I welded mine 7 or 8 months ago and I love the way it launches now. I can say however with a welded center and rear it takes a few people to push it around the shop, other than that I am glad I went this route!

Seriously? A car with welded REAR handles great in the mountains? I thought mountain roads usually had turns. This is very surprising. Or, else, your only other driving experience has been in a go-kart.

ps. your shift key is broken

Since it's so late or early (not sure which) I read speedydrifters comment and then jtmcinders and just combined the two.

Yes It handles great on mountain roads. Didn't you see FNF tokyo drift? Sorry fellas had to.

Aside from the discussion on power splits you can pretty much say for DD you would want LSD, 4 spider or maybe weld the center diff.
For beat on it drag racing and be fast weld the center and rear.

I remember some videos with slow motion launches that you could see some differnces in tire spin front to back. Would be worth finding them for this discussion.
