This is my first official question on here... YAY! This site is full of information and I can't wait to start applying it to my Talon. I've read some good things about COP ignition systems and have owned cars with them...I've done some reading and have seen that alot of tuners choose not to go with the COP? Isn't it more effecient than stock? Most of what I've read say that the stock system still works well at 500+ HP. Not that I'm doubting anybody but I don't see the down side to upgrading the ignition system as well. Maybe it goes with the saying "if its not broke don't fix it". Just wondering why you wouldn't want to upgrade.

How could a coil system not designed for a motor be more efficient than one that is? The coils can change the dwell time and is not an upgrade. it is more of a appearance mod at that point.

HOWEVER, if you run a cop set up with some type of spark amplifier unit, there is a benefit and it becomes more efficient
.

"No high voltage wires means NO voltage leaks and NO MISFIRES due to bad plug wires. Using individual coils for each spark plug also means the coils have more time between each firing. Increasing the "coil saturation" time (the time the voltage to the coil is on to build up its magnetic field) increases the coil's output voltage at high rpm when misfire is most apt to occur under load."

This was quoted from the Sparktech guys, I mean it makes sense to me. I also think what you guys are saying makes sense also.

Sounds great in theory until you realize that where before you were providing 12V for 1 coil to power 2 plugs, that voltage is now being halved across 2 coils to power 2 plugs due to having to wire them in sequence. this means the output voltage from each coil will be less, so in fact the spark is not as intense as OEM. This is why if you go into past threads you will see members posting about misfires when they went to COP. Some have managed to get by with bandaids like decreasing the plug gap. If you go to wiring them in parallel, then get ready to dip into the electronics parts bin. Hence the recommendation to get an amplifier if going COP.

Arent the individual coils still batch fired since our ecu isnt designed to....but does seem more of an looks thing but have seen the coil pack mounted under the intake manifold which looks even cleaner to me.

Ya, the coil packs do have a visual appeal, but I'd rather go where the performance is at ya know. Having an amplifier is still an option though. I gotta check the Sparktech website to get more info on their complete systems if I do indeed go that route. But if you can save a buck and get performance...leads me to keep the stock set up.

With this quote they aren't taking into account the waste-spark system. Like mentioned before, your now splitting the voltage to 2 coils instead of 1. But you are also still firing 2 cylinders at once so your dwell time isn't increased. So now you have decreased voltage to the coils while giving them no extra time to charge. Unless the coils are sequential (firing in order rather than 1/4 2/3 like the stock coils do) you are downgrading the ignition system. Pick up some good wires, get the recommended NGK plugs, and you'll see more benefit than a plug-and-play COP system.

COP setup is NOT necessary unless your making some SERIOUS power(600+whp), put your money elsewhere and buy some MSD wires.

+1... I went to a COP setup and was having problems (Idle, Misfires, etc). Did research on Tuners and found this is very common. So I sold mine. (I did not have a DIS or MSD box). As said...can't beat the stock coil setup unless you are pushing the HP...

I was having spark blow out at 36 psi around 6500 rpm on the dyno last week (factory coils) with bpr9es plugs gaped to .018", I tried my friends gsxr coils and harness, "wasted spark" I couldn't get over 30 psi or the 500 mark with those "cop". I ended up running my factory coils and a .012" plug gap ended up @ 622hp and 477tq @36-37psi stock coils and NGK wires

Well that pretty much says it all right there :thumb:
