Alright ive got a question im not so sure about, so here goes.

My water temp gauge died on my cluster a few weeks ago...so i pulled it out put in an aftermarket temp gauge and called it a day.

Now my car since has gotten worse gas mileage...so im thinking as to why and about all i can come up with is the car being in open loop trying to heat the coolant, just like when you first start it. Now would this happen with just that sensor being changed?

If the temp sensor for the cluster died then this is not your problem. The ecu doesn't take any readings from this. There is another water temp sensor that the ecu uses. If that went bad then you would know it because your car would not want to start.
