Well idk what else it could be. I heard if its the ignition coil, then both cyls would missfire but this is specifically number 3 on a stock 2g. I put in new plug wires 1 month ago, it has new copper plugs, and yet it happens randomly, not all the time. What makes it go away strangely enough is to unplug the negative battery cable. It eliminates the CEL and boom it works again. I've heard this issue with six bolt swaps but I really doubt I have a six bolt. It has happened to me 3 times so far with removing the CEL fixing it. Pretty sure im receiving spark on the number 3 plug wire because when I disconnected it I could see the spark. What tripped me out is when i did remove it, the motor wouldn't change at all but when I removed any other it would hesitate. This is only when the CEL is illuminated.

Recent work on the car:
New headgasket
new plugs
new wires
new alternator
new battery
New gaskets from the short block up
Any ideas?

So when it happens, will it just drop cyl 3 completely until you do the reset?

It will do it on and off. Today when I got home from the party, on the way it gave me the CEL, it drove fine for a couple of lights and then it felt like it was running on 2-3 cylinders (which it was), it would shake. Then another light it would feel fine but I wouldn't go above 3k rpms LOL.

You might want to take your ECU out and have a look at it. I had a similiar problem like this before and I changed plug wires twice, and replaced two sets of plugs, and after I swapped ECU's it never happened again.

Check the power transistor unit. I had a misfir and everyone blamed it on the "6bolt misfire". Noticed my ptu had corrosion built up. Cleaned it and no more misfire. I had also changed the plugs and wires.

no i haven't fixed the problem because I can't even drive the car to get the problem. It broke down on me again (what a surprise...) Anyway, hope you guys resolve your issues and don't end up on a mountainload more like I did.

Car is back on the road and still giving me the cyl 3 missfire at random intervals. could be between 1-100 miles before I get it. I can cover it up but I'd like to fix it to sell it instead of handing the problem over to someone else. Trying the injector swap tomorrow. Changed the plug again, the plug wire boot doesn't seem to be in the best shape even though its new which worries me so that could cause it but it still gets spark. I doubt its the coil pack because I believe 2 cylinders would fail not just one? Plus I get spark.

Check out ## ecu, also wen it strts misfiring pull the plug off ## injector an c if u r even gettin power to that injector

Its not the ecu, when I was having starting problems I checked it out.

Anyway, it still missfires however, if I push in the clutch and let the rpms fall then go back into gear, it will resume normal operation and stop the missfire.
