I am looking at purchasing a 91 talon awd with a spun bearing. This will be my first DSM and I want opinions on whether I am biting off more than I can chew.

My goals for a DSM would be ~400whp street fun/strip car. Probably a 50trim turbo, been looking at the PTE DBB 50 trims.

For the engine, I would get either a Bushur or Slowboy stage 1 block, or I would rebuild the engine. Both shortblocks are $2k without shipping, and I want input on how much total I would probably be looking at including labor to get a new shortblock in the car. And I have no idea how much rebuilds are typically for a DSM, much less including forged internals. Would like input on which route I should take if I picked the car up. I searched but it did not answer all my questions.

you dont even need to go that far for a simple 400hp. the stock 4g63 can handle upwards of 500whp if tuned and treated correctly. id rip out the motor and replace the bearings, if the crank is scored id get a new one, the crank is treated, and any attempt to turn it will weaken it.

btw a dsm is not a car that you should be looking into if you cant work on it yourself.

I'm not necessarily going to be forever at 400whp. I am technically capable and willing to learn, and I have access to a lift at a shop where I have friends. However, I would leave an engine swap or rebuild to the professionals.

yea there right bro, machine shops arent cheap. if you have a lil know how it really isnt that hard to build a dsm ish you can even look at howell automotive and the sell already built performance drop ins
