I just did a compression test on my laser: 160-155-160-140
I added oil to the one with the lowest compression and it jumped to 200, know the car is smoking from muffler and manifold. Any ideas?
I'm guessing the manifold gasket needs to be replaced.

Let me this right...you poured oil down the spark plug hole ? I dont know everything, but I know you dont do that....liquid can not compress and thats how you bend metal ( Rods ) or crack pistons. How much did you put in ? if you take the plug off can you see oil still in there?

Im trying to think here......maybe get a turkey baster and suck the excess out and hopefully nothings damaged and the rest will burn off...then replace your plugs and gap them to .028...Let us know

I don't think it's anything to worry about and that's perfectly normal.

Did you see the smoke and then panic?

The KEY here is how much oil did you put into your cylinder. A tablespoon or two is good enough to check if it's your piston rings that are worn. Anymore than that and it's probably not good.

If you put in only a little bit, just drive it off. The oil you put in will just burn off in short order. If you put in a lot of oil :toobad:

I let it idle for a while then drove it and then the car stopped smoking and is running fine now. I poured about a capful into the lowest cylinder.

That is good that no harm was done. Better cautious than sorry also. If you want smoke, try seafoam haha

Actually if a cylinder has low compression it could be one of two things, valves or rings. The oil test eliminates the valves being burned or bent and indicates that the rings are bad if the compression rises after you put a small amount of oil in the bad cylinder.

Actually that is what the shop manual says to do inorder figure out what is causing the compression loss. But it suppossed to just be a SMALL amount and you crank it over a few times without the plugs in and attached to the compression testor guage. Thus no hydro-lock. Its probably burning the oil that he poured into the cylinder. It should go away after a few miles though.

If the compression pressure of the cyclinder in which you poured oil increases after adding the oil, then cause of the compression loss is either worn or damaged piston ring and/or cyclinder inner surface. If the compression does not increase after oil is added the cause is a burnt or defective valve seat or pressure leaking from the gasket. In which case perform a leak down test.
