Here we go, thread #1 for me, so please point out what I also need to tell ya if I ommit anything. Nicely that is, no flaming is needed, and i am very good at being mean too...

BACKGROUND: 99gsx Car has been on jack stands for 4 months. Did a e316g swap, external dump o2, new o2 sensors, fmic with piping, greddy types bov (knock off), walbro255, 550 PTE injectors, afpr, apexi afc neo, palm3c datalogger. if ya check my profile you can see all the stuff, i'm sure i'm forgetting some. BUT back to the point.

Got eveything bolted on, filled my fluids, double then triple checked for leaks, found one on the oil feed on the turbo, getting my stainless feed this week. didnt know the t25 fitting was no good for the evo16g, so that runs a little, but not horrible. once i checked and rechecked everything i cranked her up. HOLY WHITE SMOKE BATMAN!!!!!!! exhaust pumps out more smoke than a fog machine at a concert. did not notice the smoke when the car was parked with the toasted t25. have 2 of em if anybody needs some big paperweights ROFL

1st thought head gasket. checked compression. 175 across the board?!?! 100k on the motor and every cyl showed from 170-175. i dont see how its possible but i checked it 3 times. running the engine between checks. and yes, she was hot. drained fluids, no mixing of coolant and oil. since all new fluids were added i figured it would be real easy to tell if they were mixing. i dont know what to check next. when it runs it is silky smooth, my a/f gage shows dead middle optimal, i did however find a DTC i did not have befoe, 1150 maf ground. cleared the code, cleaned the connectors, now the code is gone, must not have been making good contact. anyway, no more DTCs no matter how long you let her pump smoke.:barf: i'm at a dead end of my technical intuition.:sosad:

is it possible for a bad a/f ratio to cause white smoke? i was always under the assumption that was only from coolant in the combustion chamber. WTF she sounds great, no rough idle, starts at 1.5k and settles around 800. any ideas or did i totally F somethin up. anyway, if there is another piece to the puzzle i have let out let me know and i'll get the data. i've been working on this car for so long i'm about to drop a 1/4 stick in a plug hole and see if that fixes it! :p no way, too much hard work and i LOVE MY DSM. Even if it does give me 100 gray hairs a day!:dsm: :dsm: :dsm: :dsm:

:thumb: Crunchy, that is my condition exactly. I will try to flow liquid through the return out of the vehicle to see what goes through, as well as my little bucket test. If it was blocked but never boosted think it would have grenaded the seals, or was it a good thing it never saw boost and a fixed return might do it? Was your turbo still good after you fixed the return? AWESOME INFO BRO!!!! I'D GIVE YA 1BILLION REP POINTS IF I COULD!:thumb: :dsm:

and yes, definatly little tiny spittles of oil comin out of the exhaust, i had a piece of cardboard back there to catch anything coming out so i could find it easy ;-) there isnt a ton, but enough to see. i also had that from the torched t25, so i dont know if its still residual in the exhaust from that or if its new stuff, but she is still blowin a little out the back end.

I feel like I'm going back in time a year or so ago. These are the same symptons I had exactly. The kink in the return line wasn't even noticable if you flowed water through it. I bent it and saw the kink with a flashlight. I know for a fact the extremepsi oil return line had this problem (not sure if it still does) My turbo was fine afterwards. Boosting 20psi for almost a year and no problems with oil from the turbo. Thanks for the points.

UPDATE:

well guess what guys. Crunchy is awesome. Clogged return line. Except one thing. My turbo was not fine afterwards. It's dead. I killed it, new 16g bye bye, intake and exhaust side seals are gone. bummer. its getting rebuilt right now, and guess what else. its a knock off 16g evo3, not a true mitsu turbo, yay. so the guy rebuilding it is going to make sure it will work longer than a week or i am selling it and getting a REAL 16g :-(

OK. Here is some info for fellow DSMers that are lookin at a 16g and are trying to save some bucks on ebay. I took my new blown turbo to Blouchs Turbos in Lebanon PA. 30 years in the biz. Had some really cool diesel turbos that were bigger than frikin diner plates. Anyway, they know their stuff. If you are lookin at a 16g on ebay, 9 out of 10 chance is a japanese/chineese knock off. if they have a little polished plate with DSM EVOIII stamped on em and TDO5H and a serial # they are knock offs. Not the real Mitsu stuff. Apparently the casting is good. The internals are lower quality, the oil flow and control is lacking, and the wastegate port is not machined out enough. Even though they claim a large flapper, the hole is not even opened to its seam in the casting. Basically they are flaming turds. Also said not to expect much of any life expectancy if you are actually trying to use it to its potential. It was great. I carried it into the shop, he looked at it for a second, and asked if I got it off ebay. It was classic, seriously :p Just wanted to hopefully inform some people before they make the same mistake that I did trying to save a buck. Also turns out that I could have gotten the genuine thing from Blouch's for the same price. Go figure! So once the rebuild is done I'll see if he thinks its worth usin, if not try to sell it and get the real deal i guess. I want a reliable setup, not a tickin time bomb.

edit: also if it helps anybody else. It is true. It's very hard to tell the difference between white and gray smoke. obviously I wasn't seeing white smoke since it was oil blowing through the turbo seals gettin cooked in the o2 housing. no oil made it to my fmic or intake thanks to the fact that i never ran it above atmoshpere cause it was on jack stands, just collected in a low spot before the fmic. all the smoke was oil getting pumped out the exhaust side. and there is like 2 quarts in the exhaust now :p cant wait to clean and burn that out, i'll get pics!!! :D Oh yeah, and another thing I learned was if you unplug the oem wastegate solenoid you throw a code Mas Airflow ground fault, CEL. So I just plugged the nipples. huh huh I said nipple...
