I am getting a evo316g off a friend that has some compressor wheel damage for 75 bucks. He told me that i can simply buy a new wheel, rebuild it and will not have to get it balanced? He said it was component balanced. I did search and seen some posts........but i have never heard of it. If its a new compressor wheel wouldn't that throw everything off....

there has been some back and forth on this subject but... to my knowledge HI component balanced there turbo parts so technically no you don't have to get it balanced but alot of people do because if you think about something spinning at like 75,000 rpm the slightest fraction off balance and the turbo will fail prematurly... but i have done it in the past on a budget but usually would prefer not to on a turbo that means something to me.
 
ALL Mitsu turbo wheels are balanced when you buy them. To determine if your turbo has been assembled with the wheels balanced separately or balanced further once the turbo has been assembled, you must look for balance grinds on the compressor locknut.

The locknut is ground because you cannot get to the backside of the wheels once the turbo is assembled. Any evidence of grinding signals the turbo has been balanced as a rotating assembly to an even finer balance tolerance than doing the wheels by themselves.

No grinds = component balanced
; you can swap the compressor wheels without the need to have the turbo rebalanced.

Grinds = assembly balanced
; you will need to have the rotating assembly rebalanced.
