Hey everyone i'm looking to get an intake and I heard cold air intakes get better performance but they are only made for non-turbo cars. Why is it that it doesn't work with a turbo? Can it be adapted to work?

Its because of the restriction of the sidemount intercooler and the piping there is no place to drop a cold air intake down.

you can make your own cold air intake for your car, but with the SMIC you cant really do it cause it would take the air away from the intercooler, well you can but you dont really wanna. Theres a few different ways to do it. This is what im gonna do, get a front mount and make custom air duck that takes the air from where the SMIC was and feeds it up to where to stock air box gets its air from and i might get a block off plate for the cone filter or make it so the cold air feeds directly into the top part of the filter. You can just cut a hole where the filter is and make a DIY pipe that leads down the where the SIMC was and stick your filter there but im staying away from that cause ive already hydrolocked my engine once and i dont really wanna do it again or increase the chance that i will do it again.:thumb:

thats the method i wanna stay away from i think. still works fine for others though. i just dont wanna risk it.

see how this dude has a duck leading to his brakes? im wanna make something like that leading to the intake filter where its at now.:thumb:

thanks for the feedback! so are you saying with a FMIC and making a custom cold air intake that it is possible for it to be too cold or just harmful to my engine. And would you say the power output would be signifigant over a regular cone filter or is it not worth it.

im not sure what you mean? what i mean by hydrolocking is having the filter down by the ground so i can suck up all sorts of water, hehe, even though if you drive right it wont do that i just dont wanna chance it. Some say its not worth it cause we have intercoolers, but a cold air can only help, so im gonna do it and its a really easy thing to set up, its no more then a hours woth of work, and it would be really cheap.

I bought an early 90's accord 3" imitation brand air intake and hacked it up to fit where the SMIC used to be. Throw an AEM Air bypass filter on in the engine bay (so your turbo doesn't become an expensive water pump) and your golden. Price:
E-Bay Intake - $35
Bypass - $50

Thanks for telling me about the bypass valve! I would have not known what the hell was going on the first rain that hitOMG Any way I have one more question and I know it isn't 100% on topic but here it goes. My friend has an AEM CIA on her RSX type S and when she turns the car turns off her intake makes this sick ass sound and I was wondering if it can be reproduced on my dsm?

Sure can't. You won't be able to hear it on a DSM because we have turbo's, RSX's don't. Leave "wicked" sounds to ricers and 8th graders, DSM's are about power. ;)

Is there something else I can use?

I don't know about the other drivers on this board, but I don't ever hit a patch of water hard enough to get it anywhere near where a CAI filter would be on a DSM. I wouldn't worry about it. If you are fording a 30 inch stream, get a Hummer. The filter for the CAI should be right next to the turn signal on the bumper's side. That's pretty high up already. Remember, turbo's love cold air.

Quote from AEM's website:
"AEM’s patented air bypass valve virtually eliminates the chance of hydro-lock in the event the filter of your AEM Cold Air induction system becomes submerged in water. The valve installs along the upper portion of the inlet pipe and shuts down induction at the filter when it becomes submerged, rerouting air through its external diaphragm to keep water out and air flowing in. "

Well if you're gonna be keeping the MAF, you can't really modify the location of the filter. The only thing you can do is what the other people that posted have done, and that is just stick a pipe in front of the location of the SMIC and up to under the filter. If you were running a blow-thru setup (GM MAF) then you won't need the stock MAF I believe. Then you can go all cold air crazy if you want, just get some pipes and start making some curves. I think JDMAWD has a CAI setup on his 1G.

LOL? yes, you can so move the filter if you use the stock mas. Just make a DIY extension/pipe coming off the MAS and put the filter where ever you want to, i figure you would put it down where the SMIC is though. did you not think about that or something?

does the bypass valve thing work?>?

Yes they work...why do you think jet skis don't suck in water when people porpise(sp) them. I can't say anything for the AEM tho.

i was asking about the AEM one, hehe, i heard that if you put one on your cold air that it will draw most of its air from the bypass and not from the main filter=not cold air anymore, true? untrue?

oh LOL I didn't think about just putting a pipe from the MAS, oh well that's what staying up late can do to you. Also I don't know if someone already said this but if you have the adapter for a cone filter (that metal adapter that makes the inlet a circle instead of a hexagon shape) then you can just utilize that. I think my filter has a 3" inlet so you can get some big piping on that thing.
