Coil On Plug [Merged 5-7]

Unfortunately after agonizing through the ENTIRE 7 page "coil on plug" topic, I still have no solid (or any) conclusion about whether it works or is a good idea. The horse is indeed dead, but it died for nothing.

I need to replace my dying stock coils. New stock coils: $180 and a frustrating hand destroying install, Buschur COP: $280 and a simple 30 second install. For the extra $100 its worth it to not spend money on stock parts. I hate replacement parts if there are upgrades available. The question is DOES IT WORK? IS IT BETTER THAN STOCK? I don't care about anyones hacked 300M coils that don't work or various other coils that work for one person but not another. DOES THE BUSCHUR SETUP WORK AND WILL IT LAST? Let's finally give everyone a definative yes or no answer.

The next most important question is that Buschur sells 1G and 2G setups (or so my local shop says). I have a 6 bolt swap, which do I need? Does it need to have wires switched around because of the firing order?

What we need to know is are any fast guys running it.I thought shephard does now with an msd 2 on his site?

Also I have the same problem.I have a 6 bolt engine in my 97 and have a 95 eprom ecu for my dsmlink.so not sure what connectors or wiring would need to do as think you have to reverse some plugs on the 95 to 96 cars but I have a 97 with 95 eprom its very confusing.

I acually bought a cop off guy on ebay who advertised custom plug for my car and even asked if had a dsmlink and all that. But when he shipped it ,it was hokey job with homemade plate and just overall crap quality.I guess it might work fine if they are the right coils.

I thought i read they dont' work that good but there must be quite a few guys running them.I have a 2.4 and JM intake so easier for me to no have to find a place to mount stock coilpacks.I also have some big power happening soon and need to know the cop can fire the plugs no problem at 30 psi.!

People have said on here time and time again, the stock ignition is good for huge amounts of power. There is no reason to go COP unless you're doing it just to look cool.

But if you're going to have to replace your coils anyways you might as well get the ones that look cooler, are easier to install, and might perform better. The problem is that nobody can say whether or not they perform better. I am also interested in this, but I have not seen any real data on whether or not they improve performance.

Yea my thoughts exactly.

I saw some 9 second 1G drag car in a magazine running coil on plug. And some of the fastest guys from my local shop use it (and some don't). According to them its good to 500awhp without an MSD or any CD ignition backing it up. I was pretty impressed with that, and its hard to argue with someone that puts down twice as much power as you. But then I come on here and it looks like everyone says its a bad idea. I don't care if its only a 1% spark increase over stock. I don't care if its the same as stock. As long as its reliable and with last more than a year. Remember, I'm just replacing my coils, doing an ignition upgrade is secondary.

As for the 6 bolt swap issues. I'm going to call Buschur on Tuesday and I'll let everyone know what they say.

I would like to know exactly what you benifit from the cop system also. I have seen them for sale but I haven't seen or been able to find any precise info about them. I do know that Sean Glazer has them on his 92 8 second DSM but what real gains are seen?

you should be using a 2G setup because you are using the 2G wiring harness. but please comfim that with Buschur.

Also talking about COP I found this:
Features
• Improved dwell accuracy
• Improved secondary tower design
• Noise abatement material between the laminations
• Improved primary connector
• Lower primary inductance
• Early and pecise electronic spark timing
• Faster crank to run
• Cleaner combustion to help meet OBD II (on-board diagnostics) requirements
• Eliminates spark plug wires
• Programmable energy
• Better high speed performance
• Coils per cylinder ramp and fire electronics
• Reduced radio frequency interference
Benefits
• Decreases module and coil temperatures for greater reliability
• Eliminates carbon tracking of towers that result in misfire
• Reduced audible coil noise
• Easier to assemble
• Improved high-speed performance
• Increased fuel economy
• Higher energy delivered to combustible mixture
• Direct connection to spark plugs
• Use of composite iron coils
• Coils per cylinder dwell overlap electronics
• Better heat dissipation
• Decreased power dissipation and greater efficeincy
• Less radio interference

Confirmed. So anyone with a 6 bolt 2G, get the 2G COP and you should be fine with the firing order.

I plan to order mine tommorow and hopefully have it here and installed by saturday. I'll post up when I get it in. Not that my case is of any meaning, seeing as how my stock coils are going anyway.

I have the Switzer Performance COP setup and there was no 1g 2g version. It just came with a paper that said this wire is 1-4 trigger this one is 2-3 trigger ect. I have also ran 2 different ECU's with it requiring me to switch the trigger wires. I have a 95 with a 6 bolt. I originally ran with a 98 ECU and had the COP set one way, then when I got the link I had to switch the trigger wires. So in essence what I am saying is that I believe they should be the same for 90-99 unless other brands already have a connector attached to the COP setup. Mine did not, it required soldering or wire connectors or the factory plug from the coils.

So cop works fine with dsmlink? Can you still adjust timing with dsmlink or what do you mean about dsmlink supporting cop?Not clear on that. I have same deal 2g car with dsmlink and 95 ecu..6 bolt 2.4 going into it.

DSMLINK only works on eproms which only came in 95 on 2g's. If you use DSMLINK on a 97-99 car you have to switch the plugs wires from what they are supposed to be stock, or if you have COP you switch the trigger wires from what they used to be. I was running a 97 ECU with my 6 bolt so I had the trigger wires connected how they should be. When I switced to the 95 DSMLINK ECU I needed to switch the trigger wires.

EDIT: I believe when people refer to DSMLINK and COP, they are talking about dwell time. A lot of people have been asking for DSMLINK to be able to change the dwell time with COP setups which it can not do at this time. I have COP and DSMLINK and they work great together.

I am thinking of fabbing up a coil on plug setup and was wondering what coils to use. I have heard of people using the Dodge Intreped coils, are these good (better than the stock coil pack) or are there better ones out there to look for?

I have seen a setup on EBay once long ago that actually was like the older Pontiac Grand Am style with the whole plug cover as a massive coil on plug assembly. Dont know much more about it, but that it was running around 400 or more.

can someone give some more informatoin on this? If it can be fabbed up for cheap then it may be a nice project for me because my friend works at a salvage yard that has a few 300ms there.

Does the 300m coil put out a stronger spart, or is the unit itself more durable? Do we want the coils from a 6cyl 300m or a 8cyl 300m, or is there no difference? I would assume the magnum and charger would have the same coild then too, correct?

I am looking to build a coil on plug setup for my car this seems to be a very controversial subject so I'm asking no one to reply unless you have positive information towards the production of a good cheap coil on plug setup for a 90-94 dsm. This mean NO WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT don't worry about it this is what i and many others want :shhh: without paying $500 so if you don't have any info on building a coil on plug meaning what coil to use how to wire it etc please don't post thanks any info is appreciated thanks

do some research on this site and you will find your answer. i read a few threads talking about using the coils from a chrysler 300m.

2000-2003 300M 3.5L chrysler coils, toyota connectors. Moparpartz.com has cheapest coils. People have made this set-up for as little as $160.00 brand new, and is the same thing that some people sell for $300.00+. WAY cheaper if you buy the coils used.

The main reason for this setup is that you never have to buy spark plug wires ever again. That alone is a good enough reason for me.
It also cleans up your engine bay, removes your stock coil pack, and removes the spark plug wires. Supposedly it has the capability of creating a stronger spark.

I'm gunna do the coil on plug setup soon.

I've attached some links so you can read up on it and see the wiring diagram they use to wire it up to your harness:

where do you get the toyota connectors?

moparpartz.com has the coils for 32 right now. thats 130 for the coils, what have people used for a spark plug cover? just a peice of sheet metal custom cut to fit?

can someone post the wiring diagram, I know I've seen it, but can't find it in my library (what, I saw a picture and didn't save it? )
