In the middle of a pretty complete rebild of my 98 GSX. Now looking at the clutch/flywheel situation. Currently installed is a ACT 2600 and OEM Flywheel. First question: What about the XACT Streetlite Flywheels? Do they gain much in performance? How much do they hinder daily driveability? What about reliability when compared to an OEM? Second: If I stick with OEM, do I need to have my flywheel machined in any way since I already have a 2600 and would just be replacing it with the same clutch (but new)? Also, my car has 102,XXX miles on it. Roundabout when is the ideal time to replace the flywheel all together? If you cant tell, I have no experience in the drivetrain department. All help is appreciated!

Well the lighter weight flywheel will help the engine rev faster. However it will also DROP revs faster which can cause stalling depending on where you have the idle adjusted.

As far as the stock flywheel goes, YES you have to have the flywheel resurfaced and stepped properly. I usually have mine stepped to .612 Anywhere between .609 - .612 is usually okay.

I like to use stock flywheels myself.

I have a street-lite flywheel and if I rev the car and let off the gas the idle wont catch and it will bog down and even die sometimes. I have my idle set at 1000 via link.

I run the RRE no name flywheel which is pretty much the same as the XACT and I have no problems with the car stalling or dieing and my idle is set at 750.

I have also killed a CFDF pressure plate and an ACT street disk with a 2600 pressure plate on the same flywheel with a re-surface in between and there have been no issues of cracking or anything. The flywheel came out fine I just re-surfaced it to be sure it was still flat.
