I just installed a new clutch and after finding out that i could not get it to disengage I started eliminating possiblities until I decided that it must be that i didn't get the flywheel turned, but now im not so sure.

After removing the clutch from the flywheel it is apparent that the clutch disk was making some contact with the pressure plate. Before you say it's supposed to let me explain. It seems that the springs on the clutch disc which are the highest point of the clutch disc were making contact with the pressure plate fingers.

Now i dont know a lot about clutches but im pretty sure that this is not supposed to happen. BTW the flywheel was stepped at .610 before i got it machined. I got it touched up just for the heck of it. Has anyone ever come into this problem before?

You stated that you didn't "turn" the flywheel, then you say you did machine it. Which is it?
Then, you mentined that you got it "touched up".

You should have the flywheel machined if you already haven't. You shouldn't have any reason to touch it up after it is machined, assuming it was machined properly.

Are both the pressure plate and clutch disk new? Are they made by the same manufacturer, or no?

Like I said, when i put my tranny/clutch back on i hadn't gotten the flywheel machined. I couldn't get the clutch to disengage so i took it back off and took the flywheel to the machine shop because i had narrowed it down to either the flywheel or the clutch. They measured and it was already at .610 where i wanted. So i told him to just touch it up to make sure it was completely flat.

I did this assuming that the flywheel was the problem but like I said im not sure now because of the issue with the pressure plate/clutch disc. Yes they are from the same manufacturer and they are both brand new.

May sound stupid, but did you install the clutch disk backward? The raised portion should go toward the pressure plate with the "flatter" side toward the flywheel.

Yes, LOL i did install it correctly. At first i thought maybe I hadn't and that the raised portion was supposed to go toward the flywheel and thats why it was making contact with the clutch fingers. But then i tried for the hell of it and if you actually try to put the disc on backwards it doesn't fit.

I really think something is just wrong with the clutch, maybe they sent the wrong one or something. Has anyone ever had this happen before?

I am currently doing a clutch job on my car as well.

I spoke to the tech dep. at ACT, and he told me that the most common cause for the springs on the hub to come in contact with the PP is that there is too much travel. Meaning the adjustment rod on the master cylinder is too far out.

Try adjusting your clutch.

The only thing that doesn't make sense about this is that if too much travel was the problem then disengaging the clutch would not be a problem. In fact it would more likely be the opposite where i could not get my clutch to engage.

This is an XTD stage 2 clutch. They are not as popular as say ACT in any way but I have read good reviews about them and i know someone personally who has had success with this manufacturer.
