Clunk-hard shifting in auto gst

Well guys, I have an automatic transmission 97 GST. When I shift from parking into reverse or neutral into drive it feels a clunk and the whole car bumps. When it's cold is even worse because it seems to be the whole car wants jumping. This just happened when I'm stopped or parked, when the car is running shift from 1st into 2nd--3rd is smooth. I've checked the fluid level and it's OK. The check engine light is off. There is no grinding sounds or anything like that.

Could be transmission or an Engine problem?

I would also like some insight on this since I am tired of getting whiplash every time I put it into drive .

Check your rear diff, and fill it with 75-w90
should lessen the clunk, may not completely fix it though.

Except that the OP doesnt have a rear diff. Read the title, GST.

I know this thread is a little old, but you never replied if you fixed the problem or not. You have checked the fluid while the transmission is warmed up, and you say its full.

Could be a problem in the valve body or torque convertor, but Id try flushing the fluid and replacing the filter first. Do you know if the transmission has been serviced at the proper intervals? Automatic transmissions are usually overlooked at the maintenance level until there is a problem and then its usually too late.

Have you checked your mounts?
