Clunk from first to second

I have a 97 EG ESI, and for the two months that I've had it I keep getting this annoying clunk from first to second. It happens about 90% of the time, and really no matter how I shift it's almost impossible for it not to clunk. Sometimes I can make it go away if I hold in the clutch a little longer, but I don't have to do that in any other gear.

So far I've replaced the engine mount hoping that would make it go away since it was rotted out, but I still have the clunk. The noise is somewhat central, and back towards the firewall. Any ideas? Could shifter bushings cause that?

have you check all the bolts holding the tranny to the engine also it could be your 1st to 2nd shifter rail going out

I haven't checked all the bolts, but I'll do that tomorrow and see what I find.

I checked all of them, and they were pretty worn out. I replaced them yesterday with brass bushings, but I still have the clunk.

Oops meant motor mounts not shifter bushings.

Yeah I was going to say motor mounts too, before he ^^^ corrected himself!

My quick, easy check for this (might not be the correct way) is to prop you're hood up and make sure you are in kinda an open area. Slap it into first and put you're right toe on the brake. Start slipping the clutch (give it some gas with you're heel if you have to) and watch the engine. Do it in first and reverse. If the engine moved more than say an inch (give or take) or if it makes the sound, start checking all of the mounts!
