Just finished complete rebuild on my 1992 eagle talon tsi awd motors back in cranks up and runs fine. BUT there a clicking from under my valve covers sounds like the valves. and about every 25 seconds there's a small pop like a cam just letting a valve slam shut kinda. It never gets louder or quiker in succession I haven't narrowed down where its coming from definitey top end somewhere (Might be my power steering pump making the pop or alternator they have always been noisy.... and yes I plan on replacing them)

Here's everything I guess could affect the valves:

-forged rods and pistons wiescon 8.3:1
-new oem valves
-brian crower dual valve springs
-HKS 272 cams (used...idk how long or mileage on them)
-adjustable cam gears (still in the normal/home/factory position)

EVERY seal/pump/gasket on the motor has been replaced

No smoke

The motor at TDC lines up like it says in the haynes manual with the cam gears dowels pointing up (done 4 dsm timing belts jobs pretty sure its on there right)

Oil pressures fine. Picks up and runs fine. I obviously can't push the car too hard. It only has 2 miles on the new motor.

There's no metal flakes or shavings in the oil

Any ideals or if you need more info to help me figure out what's wrong let me know

Time to check valve clearance.

It's a little late to for that. Tell me how he is going to check those type of clearences on an assembled running engine.

OP.. It really would help to post a video of what your describing. Sounds to me like this is probably lifter (lash adjuster) related. I wouldn't go so far as to say your making piston to valve contact. New builds can have a very noisy valvetrain for sometime. Did you bleed your lifters? Are these new or reused? 1g, 2g, 3g?

I got the car running at 2pm may 26 so its only been doing it for a few hours. Its idled for about a total of 40 mins and has been driven about 10 mins at 30mph. And before I put the motor in I turned the crank over. Besides fighting compression I didn't feel anything that felt like something was making contact in there :/

When I assembled the head it was completely bare. I dipped each part in oil (except valve stem seals and cam seals) before installing it the only parts I re-used on the stock/factory 1g head were the retainers, keepers, rocker arms, and the lifters

I had no clue lifters were to be bleed :banghead:

I tried to record a video of it for a friend but the exhaust is so loud

I put like 4 grand into this engine I really don't want it to blow up

First and foremost I wanna say to paintballa5: that was the single most helpful link anyone has ever sent me saved me like 2 hours worth of time and knuckle busting trying to get my accessories and timing belt off. you are the ####ing man and kudos to the person who originally posted that, its genious.

Just got the valve cover off. apparently 3 rocker arms on the intake side jumped off. Under closer inspection all of my intake side rocker arms have so much clearance between the rocker and cam (when not depressed by cam) that I can almost wiggle them out from under the cam and one of the I actually could. All the the exhaust side cams have the typical amount of rocker play when not depressed by the cam. so I'm I'm guessing either I need: a new intake cam, reground intake cam or just some of those diskette/shim things under my lifers to keep the rocker arms somewhat closer to the cam when the cam isn't bearing down on the rocker arm.

And I'm pretty sure that popping was the edge of one of the loose rockers getting nipped at by the valve springs. Cause that pop really did sound like a valve slamming shut which would make sense in my mind if the loose rocker was restricting the valve spring any

I haven't got back to cranking the car yet I had some running around to do

Any ideals guys??

First are you sure they are real HKS cams, or are they the Delta HKS regrinds?

If the followers are off and that loose, something is off, tip height is too short? What brand/Part number OEM valves did you use?

Did you have a valve job done?

All I know bogusSVO is the cams have the letters "HKS" stamped on one end and the other says "272". And I got the valves from mitsubishi. I held them up to my old valves they are the same. Took them and the head to a machinist. And he did whatever machinst do to heads for new valves. I forgot the term he used.... One of my friends whos been working on cars for about 32 years says its normal for the top end to make noise for a while after a rebuild...he was in a hurry and wasn't specific by what he meant by saying "noise" and "awile". And he hasn't heard my car in person.

I popped off all the intake side lifters. And put these little diskette/washers/shim things (that came out of a previous talon I owned that had the same cams) and put them under my lifters. The pop noise went away and I don't think my rocker arms jumped off. I drove the car about 20 miles today. Everything seems normal. I'll take the valve cover off and check it out tomorrow. The top end is still a bit more noisy than id like but. Everything is holding up
