Cigarette lighter into a gauge holder?

i have a gauge i need to install but dont have the money for a pillar pod so i was thinking of putting it where the lighter is. if anyone has pictures and could tell me how hard it was go get it there (by that i mean sit right and be held in place) could you post it?

I know this isnt answering your question, but it is another alternative to mounting the guage in the cig lighter. I have my boost guage in the door vent b/c that vent doesnt do jack anyway and i hated having the cops/ricers seeing my boost guage on the A-pillar and coming after me. Traced the vent onto the smooth side of a mudflap, cut a hole for the guage, and mounted her up. Took about 5 minutes total and i like it down there.

Not a great closeup but the whole thing took me about 45 minutes-including wiring it in from the engine bay. Its not very difficult either. I used a compressor and a grinder wheel-not sure the name of the exact tool-but its a metal disk thats very coarse on either side-like sand paper. The plastic melts, so be weary of that.

Man, I made the mistake of putting mine where I thought would be a cool spot too, and its waaay to low. I put it in the dash, one of the three circles where the heat controls are on a 1g. Its in the gallery. If I were you I'd put it someplace where you dont have to take your eyes off the road to look at it.

I thought that too when i first bought the guage, but found myself only looking at the guage when i either turned up the boost, or periodically during the week to make sure it was at vaccum and didnt leak at idle. Once i got over staring at it moving around i hardly ever looked at the guage, so decided to move it down. I check it about once a week now just to make sure everything is in good working order and I leave it alone. For the 2 seconds it takes me to look at the peak psi when pinning the throttle, I dont think its that much of an inconvienance

I went a little further and put three gauges in that spot. Only problem is that the section isn't flat, so the gauges are kinda angled differently as you can see in the pics. Yes, the shifter does basically block out the water temp gauge in 1st, 3rd, and 5th, which is why I put it there. I can just peek around it if I need to take a look. I like having that little storage pocket, which is why I just didn't get/make a DIN panel, and I hated the attention that I got from having gauges mounted on the a-pillar. Boost and EGT gauges are in a gauge bezel pod.

thats very creative i think ill do that b/c its easier to see and i dont have to look down as far to see it. did you route the lines throught that duct or did you go further next to that black hing thing (i cant think right now)? huafist, thats a good idea also but as kyle said i have a 2g so i cant remove one with out sacraficing 2 guages.

Yea i cut a tiny little hole in the rubber thing and fed the wires/hose through. Went from the door through the fender, and into the engine. Had to check a couple times to make sure i wasnt pinching anything or blocking the vac line, but i got it to work in no time

why not just buy a gauge cup for like $10 and put it next to the pillar? i was gonna do that but then I got a really good deal on a pillar pod and that was the end of that.

If you move the cup far enough forward, you can hide the gauge from other drivers and still be able to see it. they even make them in carbon fiber, which is cool if you're thinking of doing other cf stuff on your car...

i don't have a pic, but ive seen it done. im sure you can get a gauge cup for really cheap on ebay or something. hell, for a few weeks after i installed my boost gauge, i broke my gauge pod during the install and ended up using 3m padded double side tape to tape it to the dashboard near the bottom of the pillar. thats probably not the best idea though cause the sun makes the tape get loose and the gauge then rolls all over your dash.

This is a guide on how to mount a boost gauge in the cigarette lighter. I've seen alot of posts looking for this so I decided to take some pics and post um up after I was done with mine.

I used a chiltons manual for getting the center console out.

The supplies needed.
- Screw Driver for removing the center console.
- Boost Gauge + all associated hardware
- Drill
- Drill bit (whatever size your gauge is)
- 1/4" drill bit (only if you install the turbo timer through the console)
- Dremel if you dont have a drill or a bit big enough for your gauge.


Once you have the center console out you need to get your drill bit or dremel to remove the center of the cigarette lighter.

Making sure that it is supported and start drilling it out. Go slow because the plastic starts to burn and curl, the slower you go the better

I decided to go a step further and install my turbo timer in the same location. I have the Apexi Pen Type Turbo Timer which is attached to a control box. The way to get the two disconnected is by removing the white attachment on the control box. You can take the two screws out then remove the white clip.

You can then take a 1/4" drill bit through the center console near the end of where you want your TT to be and then squeeze the white connector through the hole.
