So I had the stock chrome rims on my gst and they constantly went flat, I thought it was the tires since I got them off craigslist. Well, I switched rims on my gst and thought about putting my other 1g back on the road and using these rims. I bought tires and took it to the tire shop to get them mounted/balanced to only find out (without telling me first) that the chrome is chipping and won't hold air. The guy said its common with ALL chrome rims and that manufacturers didn't think about the "long term" consequence with these chrome rims. They still went ahead and put the tires on the rims and said they probably wouldn't last but 1-2 months and one tire is already completely flat (saw and heard it leaking yesterday!) Has anyone ever had this happen to them or been told the same thing? The mechanic said they sandblasted them and checked for them leaking air, which obviously they did a terrible job at.. What can I do to fix it? Thanks for all suggestions.

Your better off getting new rims. A specialty shop would charge about he same amount to fix chrome rims as a good set of used ones

It's an easy fix. What you need is a wire brush, better yet a wire brush wheel for a drill. And some Rtv. Remove the tires from the rim clean the inner lip with the wire brush where the tire seats itself to the rim. Make sure you clean off all the peeling Chrome. Then mount the tire and before filling run a bead of Rtv on the inner lip that you just clean. And your good for as long as that tire is on that rim. if you happen to replace the tire for some reason you'll need to perform this again.
