chipped tooth on timing belt

How catastrophic would it be if a tooth on the timing belt was chipped? Reason I ask is I know someone who this happened to. A bolt rattled off and hit the belt. They shut it off immediately. Are they going to have to rebuild the head you think?

Replace the belt. No need for a rebuild unless it skipped time and bent valves - which depends on how bad the "chip" is.

Usually, one chipped tooth on a belt will not affect it. Chances are slim, but sh*t happens. Just replace it ASAP. May I recommend a Gates Belt combo? They are great and used on JGTC cars.

Where do you get gates belts from. My friend was going to look into a GReddy Kevlar belt. But I will recommend gates.

A "chipped" belt tooth will reduce your grip on the crank sprocket by 1/12. A chip from a sprocket will rapidly spread its damage throughout the belt's teeth. Keep the sprockets and the belt spotlessly un-flawed.

replace the belt asap, and if hes getting the Greddy belt, thats better than the gates. but you can get the gates and orielly's and autozone and most other auto part stores. i personally use gates because there not to pricey and very reliable

the heads are Interference head, so you need to be careful with it,, i myself would not take guess and i would check the head and piston, but you have to pull the valve out to see if thay are bent, i had mark on my piston on 1 and 4 cylinder, but have bent valve on cylinder 3, it better to check and replace now then down the road,
