checking my ignition timing

help a confused newbie out. i just checked my timing with a timing gun but i cant really make sense of the timing mark pointer plate


the plate looks exactly like this


BTDC 1
10 T
| | | |



my proper timing is 5 degrees btdc. my haynes book said the marks are either one or two degree increments, but then where would 5 be if that is a 10 on the second mark? can someone make sense of these marks for me?

i couldnt get that drawing to come out right, the 10 is the second mark, and the T is the last mark

There are small increments that you probably missed, like this:

----^--^--^TDC
----^--^5*
----^10*

i was wondering about that, the plate isnt in very good condition and probably needs a good cleaning, maybe some smaller marks will show up.
