ignition timing

The ignition timing is off on my car(95 tsi). I checked it with a timing light and its retarded quite a bit. I know on a 95 you cant adjust base timing but is there a way to make the computer go into base timing mode? I'm thinking maybe the knock sensor is malfunctioned and is making phantom knocks and is consequently retarding the timing. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

It could very well be you knock sensor retading timing. Have you checked your harmonic ballancer to make sure it is marked properly? You can do this by placing your number 1 clyinder at TDC compression stroke and makeing sure your mark n the harmonic ballancer is where it should be.
