Well, finally had a warm day and all the snow melted so I made some progress! Here's some pics. Looks like the bell housing was the only thing damaged hopefully. I'll be taking it apart here soon. Can you say explodo clutcho!?

This is what she looks like right now without the motor and trans in it. I figure some tlc to the interior, check out the motor and get new trans, clean it up, replace some ball joints, throw some black paint on it and it'll be ready to go!

It's quite annoying to see perfectly good cars scrapped. I especially detest all the people who buy up people's failed projects, part them out, and scrap them. And people wonder why prices go up and manufacturers stop making parts. I'm pretty sure Mitsubishi know when cars are scapped.

^^I'm with you. OP fix it up man can't wait to see the finished project!:hellyeah:

I wish I were as mechanically inclined as the general public on here :/

Its always great to be able to restore a vehicle up from being a goner.

I am only 23 though... Think I can start now? Hopefully its not too late.

WTF Good god man! What did the PO do to that thing?! I have grenaded a throw out bearing in a Jeep under a TON of pressure and it didn't do that much damage.... Wow...

I'm thinking it was a higher rev burnout and the clutch was slipping and overheated the sob and it came apart. Turbo on stock clutch will do that. It just can't handle that much hp.

I'm only 20 and I'm on my thrid DSM which is on it's second rebuilt engine. But it's never to late to start. Just pick up an owners manual, a good socket set, and start small with preventive maintenance. Today it'll be changing differential oil, tomorrow you could be swapping the trans. :D

OP- Looks like your making some progress! Any plans for paint?

It's never too late. Just start reading and checking out 420a rebuilds on Youtube. I never went to any mechanic classes or schooling.... Dsmtuners, 2gnt, and a Chiltons or Haynes manual are all you need! Just jump into it and don't make any guesses, research all of your questions as you go and you can't go wrong. Don't take shortcuts because they bite you in the ass in the long run. Just like this car I'm rebuilding, if the clutch had been upgraded, the trans would still be alive and car still drivable, but instead, I got it for $200 and have to replace it. Don't end up having to sell your car for $200 LOL.

Yeah, I'm going to be doing some sanding here soon to take off the crappy primer job that was done. They didn't sand the original paint well enough, so the rattle can primer is starting to flake off in spots (gotta love it)... I'm going to go with a single stage black more than likely, not looking to spend a fortune on paint. I just want to make the car pretty again. I'm not really worried about the mechanical stuff, it's the sanding.....and painting......and sanding......and painting......and buffing......and all the great stuff that comes with bodywork LOL. (I hate body work) But surprisingly, there are no dents anywhere! The only thing that needs to be done is filling the old spoiler holes.

Yea, but I have blown up a puck clutch at 6500 rpm on a heavy uphill climb at high speed and it didn't shatter the housing like that.... Are the 2g bell housings pieces of crap I should have a scatter shield on?? I have seen 2g's blow up, but never like that... Every one I have seen was contained in the housing.

Edit: Nevermind.... YouTube answered that question. Scattershield seems like a good idea.

Yeah, I've never actually seen this before, so idk. He's lucky though, where a chunk exited out the rear, the shift cable mount blocked it from hitting the firewall....Dunno if that would have done any real damage to the firewall or anything, but that plate kept it from hitting anything else.

jesus christ that's one exploded clutch O_O

nice save though =D

That'll own all after $10k and overnight parts from japan...

$10k? Bah! I could make it own all for $500... Couple cans of Rustoleum and a 350 yanked out of a Chevy with a NV4500. Stick a 9" gear set in the rear axle, hook it all up with some duct tape and JB Weld.... Proceed to kicking ass. :D

^ Lmao I would actually pay $500 to see that in action. Although it might take more than $500 worth of JB weld to hold a 350.

Sounds good man. I hate body work as well, it's boring and takes way too long. Paint isn't cheap either, even for the single stage at the auto parts stores.

And that clutch is pretty typical of weak flywheel vs strong clutch and clutch dumps. You can see where the PP bolts ripped clean out of the flywheel. That's why scatter sheilds are required for high HP cars at drag strips. Failed clutch = frag grenade.

That will be one huge challenge and put a major dent in your bank account!

BUT once that's done, it'll be an amazing accomplishment! And something all of us here would love to see the end result of!

Best of luck on your journey! Keep us posted with how it's going!

I think you missed that the 10k and over night parts was a Fast & Furious quote :p

I'm only 20 and have owned three already. Sold one Talon with eclipse conversion to a guy who is fixing it up to sell again. Wrecked my first Gst, swapped the engine into my current DD and hoping to find another donar car for my race build. Or an evo shell so I will have somewhere to put my evo engine! :hellyeah:
Its never too late man. Dig in to this almost encyclopedia of DSM History and knowledge and get to it! :rocks::thumb:

So I'm contemplating whether or not to rebuild the bottom end... I wish I had been able to drive the car or know how the motor was performing before tearing it apart. Also with I could have performed a compression test before hand as well.... I really don't know... Here's some pics of my progress.

That looks slick and ready to kick. Nice crosshatch, I can tell the piston top is nice and cleaned, more so than a cursory steel wool scrubbing.... I'm guessing you went after it with cutting oil and a good ball hone. It looks good. That last piston was a real frustrating POS, wasn't it? I can see where you tried to pop loose those spots... I think those are perma-there unless you bore it. It almost looks like your gap is more open on that last one too... I'm going to guess that is #4?

I have seen that movie twice... Once when it came out, and a second time when I was drunk and didn't want to find the remote. It was cheesy B at best, so if I am going to have to remember cheesy B quotes, it is going to be "I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hampster, and your father smelt of elderberries... Now go away, or I shall have to taunt you a second time..." :D

Actually, I haven't done anything to the shortblock yet! Those are the oem crosshatches and I haven't even cleaned the piston tops! All I did was wipe the top of the block surface and piston tops with some paper towels. I'm just trying to decide to rebuild the bottom end or not.
