When lights come on after driving like that I would think it would be the O2 sensor since it takes its time and reads the voltage and then does its thing. My g/f's CEL comes on in her CRX after she hits 3k rpms then goes away. Those rings are shot though and I'm thinking that the O2 sensor is reading that.

Your best bet would be to borrow a logger or if you have a PDA or a lappy to use I can show you how to make the propor cables to check your codes.

Is the car running ok?

Gotta love OBD1 hehe.

The only way you'll know is if you hook up a datalogger while the check engine light is on. That should tell you what error code it's coming up with.

As 1gcrazy said, the o2 sensor is a likely culprit. The only time I ever got my check engine light to come on was when I had a bad O2 sensor. I've unhooked the mass air flow sensor, pulled out plug wires and none of that tripped the light LOL.

Being a Calif. car get a volt meter and get the code. mine is doing the same thing, If it is showing a EGR code 9 times out of 10 it will be the temp switch on the back side of the egr valve. And the CEL will come on and go off but the code will be stored.
