The check engine light on my car just flashed on, I know why it did but i was just wondering if there was any way to shut it off without going to a mechanic. Cant you pull the battery cables or take out a fuse and put it back in? I really dont want to go to a mechanic. so all the help would be appreciated

ahhh the good old cheesy steven segal movies......

you have no sense of sarcasm.........

as for the original owner.....Have you CEL read, so you know what code it throws. then you can fix it and the CEL will go away. You can reset your ECU by pulling one of you battery leads...wait few seconds and plug it back in. This won't really fix anything since it will come back one sooner or later. Lastly, one of the dumbest thing to do, is pull the CEL bulb from the dash. By doing that you would be only asking for trouble...

When I installed my HKS SSQV BOV unrecirculated, my CEL came on. Even after installing the HKS recirculation kit, my CEL was still on. I disconnected the neg. battery cable for about 15 mins, and reconnected it, and my CEL hasn't appeared since. It would depend on the type of code that is getting thrown...if it is a basic problem such as my BOV-CEL scenario, you should be able to hunt down why the light turned on. But if it is something out of the blue and you cant think of any ideas due to any symptoms that your car is expressing, you'll need to find out what code is getting thrown.

PS. If you have the factory stereo, disconnecting the battery will shut the stereo down, and you will need the factory security code to be able to use the stereo again. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE CODE. It will most likely be found in your owners manual.

See now that's a nice post.... :thumb:
You said everything that I was going to say except pull the bulb, you're right about asking for trouble....

The funny thing is he said that he knows why it thru a CEL, he just wants to turn it off.... so may be your first statement isn't too far off....
Peace

I'm not supporting his dishonest behavior at all ......

My wife always says what goes around comes around.
I always get on her case for not telling the person off or whatever the
situation has been, and yet she is always right.....
I've benefitted from watching her get the last laugh, hella funny....

actually i just figured it out. I think the alternator is dead, or the battery has died. This is why the cel went up. it was idlling like crap and the windows werent rolling up very fast, and the sunroof moved at a snails pace. I tried to start it at lunch, no juice. I just figured it was the battery and i hope to god it is not the wiring cause then i am really screwed. So i will figure it out later.

actually the stereo works fine after i changed the battery, i didnt have to enter a code plus the stereo gave up on me anyways the FM wont come in and cds get stuck in it. I cant even listen to music anymore

Also I am not trying to be dishonest because if i was a major problem, I would be in deep shit if i sold it. I figured the problem out so it is dead in the water for selling anyways. It would almost impossible to sell a car with a cel. somebody would sue my ass once the problem came back. So after i replace the alternator or battery, i will see if it pops back up. dsm's drive me crazy.
