I have the TRE 10% taller 5th and I love it! Great for cruising on the highway, it does help with gas mileage!

Not to mention the ability to go 160 mph at 6000 rpm, yeah that was fun.

TRE has the 10% taller 5th... but I believe they used to have either a 20 or 25% taller one also... If they made it before, they'd probably be willing to make another one... worth a shot if you were really interested.


And, as was mentioned there are several places that can get you taller 5ths. Not everything these places sell is on their website. Some of the better performance shops build engines and tranny's and don't even mention it on their website. The best thing you can do is call around and talk to a real person. There's at least one I know that does a 12% IIRC.

You might gain 2% MPG with a taller final drive, but even that is iffy because you're dropping the engine out of its efficiency range.
For mileage, get an N/T.

A few people in here were saying how the honda cars get such great gas mileage and that we can't. I, with my car completely untuned and just not boosting can get 30+mpg. That is in my mirage turbo. Has anyone thought that the extra oh 1000lbs over a honda hatch has anything to do with it (DSM) not (CSM)? I do alot better now with the afc leaned out on my mirage. I just bought a fwd turbo trans for the mirage and it has taller gears than the mirage and in the process of getting a new chip with a lean burn setting. I want to see what I can get out of it.

Where to buy longer/shorter 1-5 gear sets and higher 5th gear and rebuild kits?

I had the sire but i lost it. I know its out there....

I want to know the site or any sites selling the longer/shorter 1,2,3,4,5 gears.

I have a 2g.




Dont ad this thread to another one unless it meets the criteria of what i am asking.

I know its possible i am JUST ASKING WHERE IF AT ALL ANYONE KNOW of any venders on here does someone know off that sells these parts.

The 1G fwd turbo and NT are rated at the same mpg, which is most likely due to the shorter gearing in the NT trans.see 2008 Fuel Economy Tests

Oddly, the 2G NT gets better highway mpg that the turbo fwd, but the turbo gets better city mpg, so it's a tossup. see 2008 Fuel Economy Tests

Honestly, there aren't any efficiency pitfalls in our modern engines with fuel injection and electronic ignition. There's no way your going to see the engine revs go down when stepping on the throttle more, or have the revs go up while easing off the gas pedal.
I've had the discipline to hold a steady 50 mph on certain parts of my long, boring commute, and the MPG has been fantastic! The engine is turning about 1900rpm with the 8% taller 5th gear in my trans. The engine is almost lugging, but my foot is extremely light on the gas pedal. I'm logging about 95 to 110 Hz on a 2G maf at these speeds. That's nothing!

I'd also like to report that I've hit a new personal best MPG a few weeks ago in my 1990 Laser- 53mpg and over 700 miles on one tank! (I'm never driving that slow in a DSM again)
