Hey guys we were working on a friends talon. Anyways the car made a bad noise the last time it was started and we shut it down immediately. Anyways we pulled the engine out to change the trans and do a balance shaft delete. We went to try to get the motor to tdc. Anyways when cylinders 2 and 3 came up to the top the engine became jammed. We pulled the valve cover off and it looks like the exhaust valves on cylinder 2 are just starting to open when the engine jammed up. We took the timing belt off and the engine turns freely now. Anyways, I think the timing belt jumped a tooth or two. Whats our chances we bent a valve. Also are there anyways to check it before we take the head off. What do yall think?

You can run a compression check or a leak down test to see what you have. If you have bent valves you wont have any compression or very low. If the engine was running when this happened it is a good possiblity the valves bent but if you were just turning it over by hand then you should be good.

I have seen many cars come in with bent valves at the shop and only a couple cracked the guides. Usually was high speed driving when the belt let go so much harder of a impact. I would have the head checked anyway while its off to make sure its not warped, cracked, etc. I always send a head in while its off to check it out. Its alot of work to but a head back on that has issues. Good luck.

If any valves kissed the pistons while the engine was running they're bent. Don't rebuild the engine! Pull the head, take it to your nearest machine shop and pay them to rebuild it. The machine shop should be able to get whatever replacement parts you need to fix it. Or even place a wtb ad in the classifieds for some straight stock valves.

You can buy stock replacement valves from PartsDinosaur, Phoenix, Arizona, wholesale engine parts and kits once you find out how many are bent.
Stock Intake Valve $6.59 each

Stock Exhaust Valve $8.79 each

Yeah we are thinking of rebuilding the engine since its been sitting for 9 years now. It was a new belt not the old one. we are getting some. New rings as it had a lot of blue smoke when it ran.Going to replace the bent valves and all the guides. Hopefully it will be a good runner after that.
