need some advice if anyone has any... i have a spare transmission that started taking apart to rebuild (the guy i got it from said it was grinding in third). i have it for the most part apart however the center diff is stuck on the output shaft and i am having a hard time removing it. the trans is apart and i would like to get it rebuild and put back together soon bu avoiding as much un-necessary disassembly as possible (the center diff is still in one piece and i would like to keep it that way).

any suggestions.

Is the transfer case shaft stuck in the center diff or is the diff stuck on the shaft that drives the front diff? Either way, grab a BFH LOL Or just a BH if your's isn't big enough ;)

Use a punch and a hammer and punch out the output shaft from the center differential towards the bellhousing. Be sure to extract the viscous coupler detent ball beforehand with a magnet, otherwise, don't lose it when you pop out the output shaft.

If the center diff is still stuck on the output pinion shaft after removing the output shaft, you can flip the case and let gravity do the work, or you can use a couple M10x1.25 bolts and a push/puller attached to a slide hammer to extract the center differential.

tried the punch and hammer trick didn’t have any luck... ended up using my harmonic balancer puller and the two long bolts from the trans case. had to use a large screwdriver to keep the assembly from turning, but it did the job. Maybe hitting it with the hammer loosened it all up… who knows.:idontknow:

Ok came across this thread cause I was installing a welded diff, they guy I bought it from said I would need to hammer it on. I ended up hammering one side to hard and it went crooked now its hammered on what should I do.

He said to remove it he used a slide hammer.

I'm not sure what to do, remove the 8 bolts from the center diff and bolt the slide hammer to the diff housing and do it that way or what. Maybe someone can draw a quick pic in paint.

Here is what I was thinking.

Or just remove the top plate and put the jaw puller on the inside?

How would you put the HB puller on it, its stuck on the pinion shaft.

I have to rent a slide hammer and I have to get someone to impact the 8 bolts off too!
