i drive a 98 GST. Bought a new 7 bolt engine out of a 99 GST 3 months ago. Today i was driving on the highway and out of nowhere the CEL came on. I carefully inspected any "weirdness" in driving and i noticed that when i shifted to fifth gear while i was doing about 65 MPH, i gave it just a little gas and the rpms were at 3k in 5th gear around 72 MPH. Is this normal? Ive never seen this happen before. I mean im getting sick and tired of fixing one thing after another. Ive been trying to deal with annoying lifter tick issue only at rpms 2.5k-2.9k, boost leaks cause i believe my stock BOV is toasted cause i barely get anywhere when i boost..i jsut replaced my turbo a few weeks ago with another t-25 & no shaft play...u get the point. Ive done a compression test on the engine like a few days ago & its 184 181 182 182. I mean the engine is fine to my knowledge, never experienced any problems with it.

Any ideas?

Edit: I changed the title of the Thread since the CEL has nothing to do with the way the rpms climbed in 5th gear. Ive also been told thats the normal RPM range so im gonna leave that out.

Ok i got the code P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1)...my question is could this be caused because of the bad stock 2g Bov that im on..because im definitely leaking boost from there, and i did a boost leak test to confirm that. My car is definitely getting more fuel than air for this reason, so i was wondering could this be a cause??

Thanks..any help will be appreciated

Check your front o2 sensor...I got that code with my MAFT and my front sensor is dead. Its possible that you are leaking so much air out of your BOV that the computer can no longer compensate for the little amount of air you are sending it and flags the fuel trim code. I'm guessing I got my code from me adjusting my STFT(bank 1) to the point that the ECU was confused.

Hey thank you so much for helping out. I will take what u said into consideration and ill be checking that. I have a TurboXS H-34 BOV sitting right here thats going on my car within the next couple of days. Ill definitely check for the front o2 sensor in the meantime and see if thats the issue..but i still believe its most likely the boost leak since my car runs wierd with that leak, and im definitely getting more fuel than air, experiencing lower gas mileage, and i always smell like im running rich more than other DSM'ers cars.
