First off I'll say, I hate searching on this site sometimes. I've went through about 60 thread of crap... And Vfaq on this is as lame as they come. For 1g's all it says is how to mount it. And for 2g's all it does is give a link to a close system fuel filter mod.

I have a vented oil catch can that I made. I want to install it. Where do I hook the lines too? One should be off the Valve cover but where does the other go? If I install it inline I'll get unmettered air. All I want to do is keep the oil out of my intercooler. Please help!

By reading the searched posts I've realized I am more confused than when I started.:beatentodeath:

What you want to do, is pull the filter off if you have it vented. Close that off. A catch can will do it's job if you set it up right.

Put both connections in the top of the canister, on from the VC into the sealed catch can, the other out of the can and into the intake.

This will keep oil out, and still give you the vac you need in the VC area. This is the ONLY way to run a single in and out catch can, unless you run the fuel filter mod, which is just running the line from the VC to the intake with the filter inline.

Both ways will keep oil out, while keeping your system safe and functioning properly.

staticbrainwash is correct, you cant have a vent on you oil catch can that kinda defeats the purpose, you might as well have put it directly on the valve cover. Its designed to be a closed loop system and should run from your valve cover to the catch can, then from the catch can back into your intake without any air leaks in between.

If you already put a vent on it i would just thread the hole and then put a bolt in it to plug it up, I have no idea how your catch can looks but chances are that filter hole would make a convent place to drain it from once it fills up.

Why do I see people with breathers clamped onto the side of the VC if it's bad to have it vented? I thought the only bad things about doing it that way was oil spraying on the engine bay.? And why does RRE have a breather on their CC if it's not supposed to be there? I made my CC from RRE's pictures. So I'm a little confused... thanks

The VC needs that vac from the intake. Why RRE's is like that i don't know. It could possibly be just because thats a standard design. But it's not a correct design. You want a sealed container to catch the oil.

And the breather filters are just a cheap way to keep oil from the intake. Instead you lost that vac, and just blow oil in your engine bay.

If oldman gets a peak at this maybe he can elaborate a little more than i can right now.

THis is what I made... Should I try again? THanks for your help. If it's a closed system, should I stagger the side inlet tubes? Also, what should I do to deal with the vapors, (which in essence is oil) that will still coat the IC and piping?

That will work man, just cap off the filter and you're good to go! Run one from the VC, the other to the intake and mount it up!

Having a breather filter connected to your VC breather inlet will cause unmetered air to enter your intake whenever you are idling or not in boost (anytime your PCV valve is open). This will cause you to run somewhat lean under these conditions and throw-off your tune.

Cool thanks, also one more thing. I'm thinking now after making it that it's a little tall. Can/Should I make it smaller? Its about 12 inches cap to cap. I also don't really no how much oil to expect to be draining either...

I don't know if it really matter: As far as oil burning goes, i'm about 1/2 quart low after 4k miles. SHe's been babied with full synthetic her whole life.

THanks again guys.

I know most people who even use the fuel flter style catch can's only need to dump it or change it every oil change. So 12" might be a little extreme. I will probably end up using the little zo6 catch can mod idea when i do mine again. With the husky filter.

Wish I would have found that thread a long time ago.... Guess the idea of making somthing was a waste of time and not trick at all! LOL Guess, i;ll be headed to home depot for the simple fix.

On the link I posted, it was suggested that if you go with a true catch can like yours (vs. the Husky can), stuff it loosely with some filtering material so the catch can does not rely solely on gravity to separate out the oil.

THanks, I'll be doing both of those things till I can see about finding the husky one.

I also think that 12" is a bit too large. I just did the Husky filter catch can and it is only about 3" or 4" which should be plenty. It's not like you're going to have to empty this think weekly or anything. They Husky filters were around $12 each at Home Depot (I got 2...one for valve cover to intake and another for valve cover to intake manifold via PCV valve) and then I just bought hose barb fittings that screwed right into the Husky filter. Very small filter that you can hide back underneath looms and vacuum hoses and whatnot.

Oh yeah it's not finnished yet... I haven't even glued it together yet. I bought one of the Shiny Chrome Mr. Gasket Coil holders (like for the old points ignition set ups) to mount it. THats why I bought the red&chrome filter so it could be as astheticaly nice as it was functional. But now I have to re-think my ideas... NO matter, I'll figure something out! I'm now thinking about making it smaller, and closing off the filter but leaving it attatched just for looks. But who knows.... I'll post pic when I finally finish it.

thanks again

I can't see the bottom very well in your pics... but what I did (I made one almost identical to this only shorter)... was to run a tube about 12" long out of the bottom, over to a vertically mounted ball valve just below the clutch line bracket on the fender well. The other side of the valve points down and has a 4" tube hanging off of it. Makes draining it very simple when you change the oil.

Something else you may want to look into are quick connect tubing connectors for the sight "glass". I used two chrome 90* connectors and 3/8" OD clear tube. That way if oil ever fouls up (stains) your sight tube, it's easy to replace.

Made the new one... Works great. I decided to clean my intercooler again. Last time I did it was when I bought it a year ago. NASTY... Anyone know where I can get cheap hard piping for my side mount?

Punishment has uicp for 99 in polished alum i think. Looks awesome. But i think they sould out really quick so it will be a week or so before they get a stock back up. Otherwise, dejonpowerhouse is where i got all mine. A little more expensive, but dejon is an awesome company. I got my intake and uicp for like 280. As for a licp, i wouldn't worry too much about it, a licp isn't going to add too much to the equation, though i would get an enlarged j-pipe for the stock licp, that helped my spool a bit, dejon has that too, and i believe it's only like 50 bucks.

If you want on the cheap, check ebay for uicp and intake, though i hear sometimes their materials are very thin and tend to bend. Or check classifides.

SLS has a piping kit too last time i looked (intake and uicp for a good price too).

Keep Checking Ebay.
I bought a Dave Brode UICP with brand new 1g BOV for under $100 - shipped.

You just have to be patient and keep looking. Probably the best bang for buck that I put on my car!!!!

You catch can will work just fine. You'll get a bit more utility if you put a couple pieces of copper tubing inside, and a couple of coarse copper pot scrubbers. And although the "sight glass" tube on the side to show the level is cool, if your engine ever pukes out enough to actually show in there, you won't be concerned about a catch tank.
