so i was on the way home from the gas station, car was running good, then all of a sudden the car just jumped and quit. it still ran i think barely for a few secs but when i gave it gas, nothing happend at all. i was thinking i was going to spin a bearing so maybe thats it? it didnt overheat or nothing. not too long before this happend, my oil psi slowly dropped like it usually does but it hasnt done it in a week or so. so, what happend? the car jumped (vibrated, popped, etc.) Please help.

It just keeps rolling over. no knocking or nothing. there has never been any knocking. sounds like its out of gas but i know its not. if the belt came off, id be able to here it. its dark out and i dont feel like looking at the dsm right now. tomarrow, ill drop the oil pan. just wondering what it could be.

I was taking it easy. Id say around 50-55mph. Ill run out and check and see if its there.

Yep. Timing belt is there. Whats next??

ECU? leaking caps.. Crank sensor... fuel pump..

start with the basics. Does it have fuel? (adequate pressure) Does it have spark/fire? Does it have compression?

ah forgot somehwere in these forums i saw alot of talk about the lead wire to the coils coming unplugged on the 1g Find where the coils plug into the harness and make sure the connections good ;)

Gosh i hope its that simple. But i dont understand what the popping came from. The car just jolted and died. Is there a way to test a crank sensor?

Sounds like your caps in your ecu popped and now your ecu is dead. Check your timing marks first (because it's free), then pull your ecu, open it up and smell it. If it smells funny (kinda like dead fish) and there's goo coming out of the capacitors (those cylindrical things), you're gonna need a new ecu.

Ive never checked timing on a fuel injected car so im going to need some help with that. How long does it take to pull the ecu? Just wanna know what im getting into. By the way, thanks guys for this help. Keep it coming. Im sure i speak for everyone when i say i want to get rid of my dsm love but this place makes me keep it. Its nice to know when i need ANY help, you guys jump in and give great advice.

Ok, not to get off subject but how expensive and time consuming is it to drop a turbo engine into a nt. ive done alot of searching. ill just make a new post tomarrow about it or after i figure out what the problem with this is.

Sorry this reply is off subject, but were you trying to sell that car or did you just buy it? I'm only asking cause it looks just like one I saw for sale on craigslist

Easy check is to see if the lines on the cam gears line up. The full check includes the cam gear marks and the mark on the crank gear.

it honestly still seems like timing to me, my cousin had a 94 N/T and it did the same thing while cruisng at like 70mph and it turned out the timing jumped and he ended up bending a valve so hopefully thats not what happened to you

Ill check the time marks today. And yes i was trying to sell the car. Ive dumped so much money in the car and then out of nowhere this happend. How in the hell does the Valve Cover come off? I was trying to take it off and all the bolts on top and near the spark plugs are off but it still wont come off. I drained the oil, no metal. I was going to drop the oil pan but i seen i have to take off the downpipe and that big bar for the engine mounts. Its rediculous. And btw, i forgot to say my check engine light came on right as the car shook. Does that mean anything?

I have a 98 GSX and something along these lines happened, instead of my car jumping and dying, it starting idling really low, and if i didn't keep up on the gas it sounded like dead. Ended up being my balance shaft belt was tore up and my timing was out of whack. The funny thing is everything checked out, or so i thought (timing belt looked perfect, but one tooth off) until I was able to get to the waterpump and balance shaft belt to realize it was shredded up in a ball near one of my idlers. :ohdamn::notgood: Not good at all. Many problems occur from issues this way, so make sure you check everything. I ended up doing a full timing job, new water pump, all new gaskets, balance shaft eliminator kit, and waiting for the first start up in a few days. Hectic situation for just a belt that could have been changed awhile before the problems occurred. Good luck :thumb:

It's his ecu...Same thing happened to me in pittsburgh on i279 in rush hour. The clicking is the fuel relay switch. If you let the car sit for a little while..does it try to start? Did you have a weird type of smell when the car died?

I did smell something weird. Couldnt really describe it. And i checked the coil and everythings fine there. How expensive and hard is it to change the ecu?

I just pulled mine (ECU) in my 2g took about 20 min that was removal inspection and reinstall. The CAS and CAM sensor are one combined unit on the passenger side rear of the valve cover mounted to the side its a round metal thing with a connector plugged into the top. There is a way to check it IF you still stumped and have ruled out all other issues PM me and ill send you an attachment how to check it. If its bad you should be getting fire or injector pulse either one. I would lean towards the ECU I believe eventually ALL 1g ECUs take a crap its only a matter of time. Somebody posted a trick of getting a compressed can of air for cleaning computers with and turning it upside down and spraying the ECU it cools it down rapidly this allowed them to get the car home. If you heard a loud popping noise this could have been the car jumping time as well you might have bent valves. I cant remember if you said you had spark though? Check for fuel spark and compression you have to have those simple 3 in order for the car to run. Its probably something simple. PM me :hellyeah:

PS what you smelt is probably electralysis (burning or shorting electrical fire)

for your next question its been beat dead its Pretty much as easy to swap a 4G63 into a Honda as it is an NT car. Nothing is the same. Most of the NT are Chrysler built and share no similarities except cosmetics. The biggest issue is the NT motors are bass ackwards and it becomes costly trying to find somebody to do structural modifications that would allow you to swap directions of motor mounts and still have the car safe to drive. Most people who research this realize its always cheaper to find a donor turbo car rather than put the 4G into an NT car.. just my two cents.

89-94 Capacitor Replacement

There are the links to check your timing, 2.0 non turbo to turbo conversion and also one about checking your caps and ecu removal.

Start with the simple checks first, before you start tearing into your oil pan and valve cover. If it was me I would check my spark and coil pack, make sure it's getting fuel, check the ecu and top cam timing marks. If you look at the cams there is 1 dowl pin in each cam. You will need to rotate your engine so take out the spark plugs and insert a wrench into the crankshaft pulley. Rotate clockwise until your dowel pins are on top, make sure the inside 2 timing marks line up.

Ok now we are getting somewhere. If you smelled something strange like a burning smell, then look at your ecu. For the turbo models it is located in the left side of the front passenger footwell. open it up and if it reaks of smelly stuff then thats your problem. Also if you turn your car to the "on" position your check engine light should come on for a few seconds then turn off. Does this happen with yours? if so then its likely that the ecu might be broken.

I did smell something weird. Couldnt really describe it. And i checked the coil and everythings fine there. How expensive and hard is it to change the ecu?

No the CEL doesnt come on when i put the key in or turn it over. Only when the car popped last night. Thanks K2 for those links. They should be helpful. Im checking spark and fuel in a few mins.

with a 1g if you turn the Key in the "on"pos. the cel will come on and the stock boost gauge should go to zero. if that doesn't happen the ecu is toast
