hey guys, last night when i was out driving around in my new 92 eagle talon i ran into some trouble. i was going about 75 while going up a hill and drive power shut off and i slowly came to a stop. after trying to start it and trying to find out what the problem was with my basic knowledge of my dsm, i decided to take it into the shop. there they told me that my timing belt was off and that most likely that the engine will need a compleat over haul because of something being bent. after talking to them for a while they came up with 2000+ dollars to fix everything if the engine was damaged. my car only cost 1000 dollars. i got a hell of a deal for it because its in really good condition. it has 113000 miles on it with no rust. also i just turned 16 today just incase any response was related to age.

here the question now. is it worth it for me to spend the 2000 dollars to fix my 1000 dollar car? or should i try to sell it for as much as i can and try to get a different talon or eclipse? i love the dsm cars and don't want to leave the family.

sorry if any one has problems with my post. it is my first one and i tried to include as much information as i can. thanks in advance to any one who is willing to give me help.

If you love dsm's that much then go ahead and get it rebuilt. Or find someone who is parting there's out in the classifieds. If everything else is good ex. Tranny, electrical, etc then definitely go for it. Lets be honest here, who is going to give you a lot of money for that car with a shot engine.. It would be more beneficial to fix it and run it for 2-3 years then either rebuild the whole thing or buy a new car. You only paid 1k for the car and now if u get a new engine it will last you a lot longer and for a price of only 3k "1k for car + rebuild " when most people buy cars for a good bit more and get rid of them in the same amount of time.

dont just go by one shops word, have another shop take a look at it. I sounds like the shop you went to just picked the most expensive job they can do on your car. They mght just be taking you for a ride, i would get another shop to look at it. Worst case senerio is you can find a 6bolt long block on dsmtrader or the classifieds for alot cheaper then $2000

thanks alot for the quick replys guys. i see your point 95DsmTsiauto but do you think it would be a better idea to get a whole new engine or just rebuild that one? also something to consider is that i was going to put a turbo on my n/t engine. do you think it'd be a better idea to get a engine that already has turbo than rebuild my n/t and than go through the whole turbo process? and project94tsi when my dad gets back home with a car we will go check out some other shops and see what they say about it. i haven't had alot or basically any experience working with shops so ill be sure to check all of them out.

thanks again for all the help that you have given.

No offense AT ALL, but get selling it out of your mind because no one really wants a n/t talon that needs 2k engine work, granted it may cost you less if you take it to a shop that wont bend you backwards.

Shop around for different prices and see if they come up with the same problem. If you love the car to death and want it back asap, sink the money.

Or if you love the car even more think about the future. Do you eventually want a turbo/awd turbo? If yes, think about how much more money and hassle it will cost you to covert your n/t into turbo.

Think about the option of buying a beater to use for a couple months and save up for a turbo/awd turbo.

Good luck brother.

thanks for the advice guys. i decided that im just going to keep it and get the work done on it. and GSX6bolt why do you have have no love for my car.....your cut me real deep right there. just kiddin i see where your commin from. my car isnt really worth anything right now. oh well. guess its time to pick up a few more hours of work.
