Worth keeping A/C in the car?

Here In, New Jersey
So, i bought the car with the belt already disconnected from the A/C. and i was thinking if its worth actually keeping the A/C compressor and hoses in there or should i just remove it? Would you think that the gain would be worth it? And I really don't care for having A/C in the summer time. Just want to know if its actually a big difference for the engine. Always open to all ideas! thanks

Well if you live in New Jersey you have the option. Live down here in Georgia or Florida you will die in the summer time in traffic.

haha yea jersey it only gets bad sometimes during the summer. but down there LOL i would def keep it

As long as everything still works with the A/C system keep it. Hopefully the compressor isn't locked up. (maybe that's why the belt is off)

i hope it does but im not sure. i guess i'll find out when i decide to put the belt back on. that would suck if it doesnt work.

keep it for the ladies, the hp gain isn't worth it to me, I drove 3 years with out a/c and will never do it again, even if I lived in alaska.

id say ditch it if you were doin a six bolt swap and building for power. but since ## still stock and probably still really nice bein that its a 99 id say keep it. the thing just free wheels any how when the compressor isnt on. there is NO power loss at all when the thing is turned off. and when the ac is on the lil bit of exrta drag on the crank is minumal. my opinion of ac for highly modded dsm is that ac sucks. stock and still really nice tho, deffinatley keep it.

yea gunna ###### keep it. if it was like a 10hp gain i'd remove it but like u said when its not on its just a free wheel so. and if im racing i dont think i'd have the a/c on anyways LOL

I agree with 99gstracer. I prefer to drive with the windows down so I can hear the exhaust and the spooling of the turbo, so I never used my ac anyways. So I ended up pulling mine because I never used it and it also cleans up the engine bay a lot and gives a much cleaner look.

I removed my power steering and AC at the same time, significant gain at the track but I'm betting it was mostly thanks to the power steering. I don't miss either, especially since there's so much more room in the engine bay.

yea im debating on it because now i think about it i never really use my a/c but i got til the summer time to think about it... it would deff help with quick engine removals too, especially since i plan to take apart the engine and build it up anyways. however i'd keep power steeering. i deff hate driving a car without it...
And i wanna take it to a road course one day so that'll help. but thanks for everyones input!

i would find out if it works. before you get your hopes up that it works and come summer time you slap a belt on it and its garbage. and if it doesnt work then pull it whenever it is convenient for you to do so. i try to work more efficiently so i get more done each time:aha:

My 1g without PS at all is easy to turn. When my 2g would lose the belt, it was pretty stiff.

just my 2 cents. if you haven't used a/c in your other cars and you believe you will continue that trend with this one pull it. check to see if it works then remove, clean and store it. should you ever wish to sell the car you can re-install at that time.
and with the compressor out of the way you will be able to move the alternator into that position saving it from being cooked by the heat of the o2housing and downpipe.

yea, thats a good point. thanks for the idea!

If you live in the north where it is cold a lot than i'd say take it out along with the power steering and put a manual steering rack. You will notice more power with those two eliminated at once. I would say keep the a/c if you plan on having lexan glass or any other lightweight glass replacement because you can not roll the windows down, that is what i'm doing :D
