Just bought a used tranny and installed it with a new clutch, new throwout bearing, resurfaced flywheel, and I did the skateboard bearing under the hood shifter mod. When the car is on, every gear seems to act like I am in first gear, even when I am in reverse and neutral. When I slowly release the clutch pedal the car rolls forward. Also, when I am shifting through the gears with the clutch pressed in I randomly have problems getting into gears. What could be the problem? I'm thinking it's a bad tranny. :notgood:

Possibly a bad trans, but I'd check EVERYthing else first before replacing it.

The first thing that comes to mind is the clutch pedal adjustment and condition of your clutch's hydraulic system. Have any fluid in the footwell? How far off the floor with the pedal does the clutch engage? How dark is the clutch fluid?

When you did the skateboard bearing mod did you make sure you put the right cables back on the right levers of the trans?

At first the clutch was engaging right off the floor but I bled my clutch and now it engages about 2- 3 inches off the ground. Its all new fluid now so its pretty clear. I didnt see any fluid in the foot well but ill go check right now. The cables are in right. I didnt cross them. They come straight out on to the leavers.

I think you may want to play around with the pedal adjustment slightly. Check the clutch slave for leaks too and check that the fork hasn't been bent. It sounds as if there isn't enough clutch fork travel to disengage the clutch properly, -in which case you'd need to either adjust to be able to push more fluid into the slave cylinder or correct the poor geometry of the fork and pivot. Just make sure you adjust the upper stop to allow some amount of free play in the pedal to avoid the dreaded 2G pedal pump-up.

Does it feel like it catches the gear before you have the shifter all the way into position? How hard is the shifting effort?

okay I just went into the car and checked it for leaks. The slave looks fine and there's no wetness in the foot well. Shifting effort seams not too bad right now.. though when I have the clutch in and try to shift through gears it randomly will grind in first and I wont be able to get it in to gear. It wont let me into other gears sometimes but it is completely random. With the car on and I shifted from 1st to second a few times and then neutral and somehow it was finally in neutral. I then put it into reverse and it rolled about 5 feet and then the car jerked back and started making grinding noises so i rolled it back in.

Heres a few pics of how my release fork is sitting right now.

After bleeding the clutch a few times today it started to feel good and I drove it around my neighborhood, but it would have a hard time going into second gear so we decided to bleed it once more. After that, it started to do the same thing again so my friend suggested I changed out my clutch slave. Got one from Autozone and changed it out. My old slave had some black gunk in it so I thought this would fix the problem. I bled the clutch again and tried to drive it and it is still doing the same thing. So I guess this would mean that there's nothing wrong with my transmission since I was able to drive it? or no?
