car started to over heat,now it wont start

i was driving today and after driving around a little bit i noticed my car was running really hot (im guessing it was running hot for awhile) so i finally got it to the house and turned it off and let it set for 10 min and went to start it and it well turn over and almost starts but sputters then dies i also noticed that on the way home after i realized it was running hot that when i gave it gas it sounded like it had a cam knocking or something..any ideas on what might be wrong?? did it run hot for too long and i messed up the head or something.

overheating..the needle was all the was up..i just when out and tried to start it again and it did but it was cooled down alot..what would the noise be then??its sounds just like a exhaust leak where the header and head meet..

Do a compression test if you can. It will give you a quick idea.

+1 on the Compression Test. Honestly, if it got so hot she won't restart, and it doesn't run right anymore.... Blown Headgasket

So it runs now correct?

Honestly the noise could be anything... its hard to pin point a noise when we dont have much history on the car...

If you really want the best solution, take a video of where its coming from and what it sounds like..

If not your best bet is to roll up those sleeves and start checking around the bay

My head gasket went good by two days ago and I could hear a sound like an exhaust leak right at the #1 cylinder where the head and manifold meet. I pulled the plugs and looked into the cylinder with a flash light. I could see water on the #1 piston WTF It also has had overheating issues for a while now. There was coolant coming out between the head and block. Right around the #1 piston.
