Car seems to be drinking oil fast?

Hey whats up guys...My oil light came on the other day, so i put some oil in. Just today the oil light came on . The car isn't smoking at all..so it isn't burning oil. The oil light only comes one when i am stopped. When the gas is applied the light goes off. Any Suggestions?

The oil light comes on when you have 3psi or less I beleive so that is almost none. The reason the oil light goes off is the oil pump turns faster as the revolutions rise. I am not real sure what would cause that maybe your oil pump is on its way out or your pick up is contaminated, the only other thing I could think of is maybe a bearing broke spun etc relieving alot of your oil presure. I have 25psi at idle without b/s. Sorry I couldnt help more.

You're losing oil that quickly? How much oil is on the dipstick?

My oil light comes on at around 8psi. If you're losing oil then I wouldn't be concerned about your light, I'd worry about the leak.

Have you done a timing belt or anything along those lines lately?

when you open your hood and look under it..what do you see? is anything leaking oil? when was the last time you changed any gaskets? oil pan, valve cover, anything along those lines... just look around for any leaks and whatnot.

Exactly what ^^^said.
1. How much was on the stick?
2. After you added oil, did you check the stick again to see if you were up to spec?
3. Once the light came on, after you added oil(if up to spec), did you check it again? What was the outcome?

The point of all these questions are to see if you're loosing oil or is it full but the light is still coming on.

If you're losing oil, we'll start looking in that direction.
If you have plenty of oil and the light is coming on, then we'll go in that direction.

The more info you give, the easier it will be to pinpoint the problem so people aren't running in circles.

Thanks for the help, and suggestions guys...i have plenty of oil the dipstick says. But after i go for a ride and am sitting in front of my house the oil light comes on. The dipstick says that the car has plenty, but the oil light still comes on. I am going to check again later too, to see what the car says. I just got home.

i had the same problem but it was when i made sharp turns, the light would come on then go away after i went straight

engine seized about a week later

just be careful and listen to any noises that dont sound right once u hear anything that seems wrong, post more info

^^^ That could work. It's on your filter housing.

But the problem could be low oil pressure. You're saying that you have plenty of oil right?
And that you're NOT losing oil. I just want to make sure I'm reading correctly.



You need to invest in an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. I'd recommend sooner than later. Low oil pressure could cause serious damage to your motor. Here's an idea of what I'm running for oil pressure.
Idle- 10psi
cruise- 50ish psi
WOT- 90ish psi

And my oil pressure is low WITH BS still in the car.

Post back your results.
Don't drive to much if you can help it until you get the gauge.

After driving today, I noticed that the oil light only comes on when i am parked in front of my house. My house sits on a hill, so maybe the oil is on an angle, preventing the oil from hitting a sensor? And you guys said crimp a light sender and the connector? Are they under the car? When i sit in front of my house the light doesnt blink bright either, it sort of flickers there on the dashboard, after a bit the light gets brighter. When i touch the gas the flickering stops.

Driver side you'll see the oil filter housing. There's a connetor on the back of the housing. I don't have a pic sorry.

Crimp it. See if it goes away then follow the steps I gave you above.

Ok, don't focus on the light but focus on the situation. Does the light come on just at your house while on your hill? Does it come on stopped on flat and level surfaces? For your car's sake...stop filling it up with oil, unless your car really is consuming it and you ARE low on oil. Start over bud, run your car until it's at normal operating temps then turn it off and wait for about a min, you don't have to wait longer than that because this is just a general oil level check + as long as your engine temp is at normal operating temps the oil will quickly settle enough to check.

Also, to answer your concern about the house/hill thing...if you park your car with the nose of it point up, then yes your light will come on. If you think about it, you have most if not all the oil away from the dummy light sensor, thus it will tell you that it's not sensing any oil. By the latter discription, I bet that's all that it is. Unless you start to hear ticking of the valve lifters or ticking of any other rotating mass in the motor.

Yea, it'll be hot. But giving the car a minute after it shuts off gives the oil time to fall back into the oil pan. If you want to wait longer than a minute that's perfectly fine. Minimum time is a minute.

Like ddavisaf stated the oil will settle to the pan. The compartment will be hot of course, but your not actually touching anything but the oil check stick. Just don't touch anything but that, . You can actually check the oil levels 10 seconds after shutting off the car actually, you are only getting an estimated oil level anyway. Even after 10 seconds most of the oil (after getting the motor to normal operating temps) will go back into the pan very quickly unless that oil is just old and syrupy (hope that it's not). A more accurate check is stated in manuals to be about 30min after shut down, I myself always forget after 30min anyway, so I wait only about a minute and that tells me whether I'm low on oil or not. Obviously I would wait longer if I'm worried about an overflow of oil, but even after a minute you will be able to judge that.

Personally i would keep an eye on my temp gauge. Although it measures water temperature, oil is also a cooling system for the car. If you notice that your thermostate is getting hotter then i would assume that your oil pump is going bad. I dont know if you normally watch your thermostat or how accurate stock one is.
