OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

your ecu may be faulty remember, the eclipse models 95+ dash bezel is all computer electronical, or your bezel that holds your tach may be faulty, go out and purchase yourself a EGT sensor and a after market engine temp gauge hook them up and see what you read. If you have a after market temp gauge or egt and its reading extremely high all i can say is... Your ####ed

May want to have your cooling system professionally pressure checked as may be a cracked block / headgasket which is directly exposing your coolant to the heat of the combustion chambers.

A less perfect DIY test would be pressure testing the intake and looking for bubbles in the rad.

Alright I'm gonna pull my radiator to see if its clogged. If the radiator is good Im gonna have to take it to a shop and have it pressure checked. Thanks guys, keep the replies coming.

Ok im a newbie.. and i read all the other problems.. and mine has a few unique things about it...

so recently ive noticed the light in my dash going on thats orange and looks like a radiator ? not sure what it is.. but everything seemed fine.. temps, oil pressure.. all that..

just got the car a week or so ago and only drove it a few times its a 92 talon turbo FWD auto...

so today.. i get in it... power steering is gone.. check fluid.. lil low not bad... top it off... still no PS... its overheating... top off the coolant..

Fan is not comming on, its boiling over... it wont cool down while driving on the highway either.. so im thinkin that the thermostat valve is staying closed ? or somthing along those lines...

so it overheats moving or not.. and the fan does not come on..... also theres no more power steering.. ( probly not related but all happened at the same time)

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

don't feel bad most people over look the simple stuff. thats why there is so many stupid questions up here people already know the answer to before they ask it.

ive got a 1991 gsx that has an overheating problum, i changed out the t-stat and the water pump and flushed the radiatior the fans turn on but the car still over heats. what could be the problum? And is it normal for the e-manifold to glow red hot after use?

I drove my car home from work on thursday everything was perfectly fine. It sat untill yesterday and I went to goto my girldfriends house and it was idiling really low (500rpm) and stalling when I put the clutch in. The rpms were falling off really fast when I put the clutch in. And I heard this strange grinding noise I cant describe. And randomly my boost gauge was reading 0 vac but when it got to the point of boost it read that then all the sudden it would read vac again when I let off the gas. So I got home and checked my coolant and oil. Both were at acceptable levels but I added some of each. So I get off to work this morning (Im there now) and the grinding was back (well i guess it never left) and the rpms are still droping off fast and the boost/vac gauge was still being weird. Well I didnt go over 55 the whole way to work and once I hit 40 the heat started peg a few miles later the heat was at the white border line for awhile then just peged in a few mins. And I kept cruzing about 45mph and all the sudden it bogged a little bit and it lost some vacume. it did that maybe 2 more times. It got me to work but it was heating up and it was about 65 out this morning and its supposed to be 90 today so I dont think its gonna make it home. PLEASE HELP ME.

warped/ cracked head or blown head gasket!!!!!! do a compression check. youll be surprised at what you find. especially if you keep putting water in it and it dissapears and you put more in it and its not leaking. <---- not good.

If you drove it overheating, you may be looking at some expensive repairs.

DO NOT BUMP THREADS.

i had sort of the same problem... except mine wasnt over heating. anyway, my prob was that one of my balacing rods was broken. that caused low idle, a loud clicking/grinding noise, and a huge loss of power, because later on i found out my block cracked in the process.

it sounds like your in for some costly repairs. The only positive sign is that you haven't been burnning any of your fluids yet. Any smoke out of the exhaust? CEL? If there is a grinding noise, i wouldn't drive it anymore. Low rpm's and a grind mean that your threw something. Check belts, check all of your vaccum lines. Check your IC Pipes. let us know;

no cels or smoke but the car has been sitting here at my work for the last few days and it appears there is a massive puddle of oil under it and its still dripping underneath.

Yah thats not good...Time to call a towtruck! Sorry to hear of your loss :(

I drive a 91 Laser N/T to work and today it was running fine, until after lunch. I got in it and accelerated out of the parking lot just fine, but then when I went to pull out onto the road, as I let out the clutch and hit the gas the car immedeatly began to stumble. As I drove I figured out that it will only stumble when I am trying to accelerate, when I am maintaining speed it runs smoothly and normally, but when I push the pedal down it begins to stumble, almost as if it's only running on 3 cylinders. I checked the timing belt out and it looks fine, however I thought it seemed like it might be a little loose. Also, while it's stumbling I hear a high pitched chirping sound coming from the engine. To top it all off on the way home it was running hotter than usual the whole way, in fact there is one strech on the interstate which is uphill for about 5 miles and by the time I reached the top the needle was almost to the red zone. I would really appreciate any suggestions as I need this car to be running right now! Thanks

My guess would be one or more bad belts/pulleys....seems like your water pump is the overheating problem. Have you checked the spark plugs and wires for the stumbling? Take a close look for cracks in the insulation.

I've got a 91 TSI AWD and I've never had ANY! problems with it over heating in the 2 years I've owned it.

Well about 2 weeks ago I noticed one of the hoses hooked to the water neck was leaking so I ordered all of those small fuel line sized hoses.

I replaced the 2 that go to the turbo cooler lines and when I was doing this I broke one of the wires that goes to the plug on the sensor in the TOP half of the thermastat housing.

Well I refilled the radiator and took it for a drive. As long as I keep moving the cars fine bu when I stop and sit it over heats.

Someone told me that wire was for the temp sensor so i fixed it by cutting off the plug and replacing it with 2 small negitive speaker termanal plugs. I hooked the wires back up but I still notice it over heats when I'm at a stand still.

If I pop the hood though, the fan does seem to be working fine though.

What else should I check? Help :p I have to shut my car off at long lights.

Where did you order all of those hoses?? Did they just give you a long piece of hose? Or is it made specifically? Do you know if its the same as a 2g?? Anyways, you may want to check your radiator cap to see if it has any cracks or if its corroded, also check your thermostat to see if its working properly. To do that just remove your thermostat and put in boiling water to see if it opens and closes. Other than that you may want to flush your radiator really good, double check for any leaks, burp your cooling system you may have air in there. To do that take off your radiator cap turn on your car let the engine idle with cap off for a few minutes or until the coolant starts to flow and then turn off your car put the cap back on and your good to go.
