OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

Its full on coolant, the fans kick on, i have great compression on all four cylinders. But its spitting out steam at the overflow. Like its super hott. And once it starts overheating it doesnt go down until i shut it off. The temp sensor is brand new.

have you simply checked/replaced your radiator cap? One of the most common things I see happening to our cars and causing them to overheat and people freak about it being something bigger.

I know this firsthand because I did too. Bought a new headgasket, cams, springs and retainers all to go into the head while it was off. Was overheating worse and worse pushing coolant out of the overflow. Decided to pull the radiator cap off and noticed some minor cracking in the rubber on it. New radiator cap and never overheated again

Edit: after reading your above post, again check your radiator cap. I'm surprised you arent pushing coolant as it sounds like the coolant system is being pressurized. Which is pretty much either always A. A bad radiator cap. B. A headgasket

if you got a new head gasket and didnt get the head resurfaced most likely your head gasket is blown again. And if you got a stock felpro one and are running high boost and dont have arp head studs good bye head gasket. do a compression test.

Like i said. I have good compression. Have the stock hg but ARP headstuds. Im not pushin anything more than 13 lbs. I dont understand. And its both city and highway. And the cap is new and the waterpump is brand new.

my compression on my 97 gst was prefect also wasnt blowing any white smoke no coolant in oil. but it was pushing coolant. If you have a 7 block in your car you cant reuse the head studs have to buy new or get arp ones

Did you get the head resurfaced? Also when you tighten the arp bolts down did you let the car get to operation temp. then turn the car off and re tighten the arp bolts down?

When you flushed, what did you flush with? What process did you use? What did you refill it with? When you filled it, did you have the heater going full speed full temp? Did you burp the lines?

Again.. Have you checked/replaced your radiator cap?
Any overheating issue that is pressurizing the coolant system is usually like 75% of the time the radiator cap from what I've seen.

It was on my talon.. On my laser it was actually the headgasket. But that's what 475whp at 25psi for 3 years on a OEM Organic Headgasket will do.

Edit; I see you said the cap was new.

Have you actually pressure tested the system at all yet?

if he didn't follow the procedure on retighen the arps his hg is def blown again

I'll be honest, I didn't re-tighten my ARP's yet.

I intended to but I still haven't since I did my headgasket. 600 miles, lots of pulls at 22psi probably around 460-470whp right now.. still no issues.

However I'm also running an MLS with a properly done surface job.

Definitely is sounding like a headgasket issue though.

with that much hp to be on the safe side check them bolts. Unless you over torqued the hell out of them cause i know people that have you might be on the safe side then

Could be an air bubble in your cooling system..
Pressure get's high and coolant can't flow through.
Way to get the bubble away is letting the air go out of your cooling system.
Open your radiator pressure cap like some people posted more.

Did you get the right HG? I seen someone put a 2.4 gasket on accident one time and when ever the car would run or come on boost it would blow the coolant out of the overflow bottle.

I have a 420a stock motor, only things I have added are aem cold air intake with aem filter/msd wires/plugs

I replaced the thermostat nearly 4,000 miles ago, so im sure its not that.. I also changed the heater core less then 2,000 miles ago (smoke was coming from air vents) im not sure what it could be other then the water pump (which im praying it isn't) my car has 90k original miles

my car has been overheating severely, especially when it idle's.. If i keep it idling at a stop light or in traffic I have to rev the engine to keep the hot/cold gauges from skyrocketing to hot.. When It approaches/goes past the hot mark on the gauge instead of hot air coming from my air vents when the heater is on, cold air starts coming through. When my car overheats smoke starts coming from under the intake manifold. After it overheats i start losing some anti freeze and have to add more.

any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

If your car is severely overheating the first thing that you should do is stop driving the car, your only risking serious damage by letting it overheat. Have you done a leakdown or compression check yet?

my 99 420a did the same thing the only way i could keep it cool was driving about 60mph
i tried different thermostats it didnt help at all i had to change the waterpump a friend of mine told me that the reason it would cool down when i was driving was because when a waterpump starts to go out the fan or whatever its called kinda floats and when you get to higher rpm's it helps it catch and starts spinning again

check your pump. If not the pump, check your fan(s). If your fan is not working, it will overheat at a standstill. My car was doing this and it fixed it. Also, go ahead and change your antifreeze out and do a good flush. If it is running hot at speed too, the thermostat is sticking closed. May have to get another one. dont let it hit the red mark. Shut it off before it gets there. You will warp your head or worse if you have not done so already.

This is not right.

I would check in this order-

Make sure fan is working
Bleed air out of coolant system
Get another thermostat (they can be bad out of the box)
Get back to us with the results.
