I own a '95 eclipse with a non-turbo 420A engine in it. I overheated my car(long story). I blew one of the cooling system hoses. I decided to be retarded and drove it once it was cooled without checking the engine first to find the burst hose. I overheated it again soon after and now the engine wont start. I only have two good cylinders and only one of which is at full compression (50 psi, 60 psi, 100 psi, 120 psi). I believe the compression stayed the same after oil was added to the cylinders for the second test. It could possibly be a cracked block which would cost me a butt load, or it could be the head gasket which would be very lucky for me. The problem is, i don't have experience with taking engines apart and being able to tell which of those problems it is. If anyone could take me through the process and tell me what to look for now, that would be awesome.

Also, i was wondering what i can do to upgrade the engine while i already have it taken apart, because i have been meaning to upgrade my slow ass 420A. I have $1000 to put towards the rebuild so far, probably can get up to $2000. Any help would be appreciated cause i need all the help i can get.

Headgasket and or cylinder head could be bad now, also you will have a lot of experience working on engines if you keep driving and overheating them, or you will be broke paying someone else. good luck

What do I need to look for when i tear it down, and what kind of things should i keep in mind when taking the engine apart so i don't #### anything up in the process. How can I tell if the cylinder heads are damaged? Also, how can I tell if the block is cracked or not? All I'm basically looking for is a description of what kinds of damage I need to keep my eye out for. Thanx.

sounds like you killed the head, my car almost overheated i noticed the smoke when the hose blew then i let it cool down rove about a mile let it cool down again, i finally got it homa after an hour, didnt wanna pay for a tow truck, my car runs fiine good compression in all cylindrers.

Take the head off the engine. (If you don't know how buy a manual.. Actually you should buy a manual anyway.)

You might be able to see if there are any blown pieces in the head gasket.. Then, you might not be able to.

Take the head to a machine shop and have them check to see if it is warped... You can check to see if it is warped badly with a straight edged ruler, but it isn't very accurate. You are just better off taking it to a machine shop.
